Lead GIS Specialist role at Gnapi Technologies Overview Lead GIS Specialist is a technical leader who acts as a crucial link between customer needs and the technical team's deliverables. This role requires full-stack development expertise across multiple GIS applications and geodatabases, with strong business analysis and project scoping skills. The ideal candidate can engage with customers from various geographies, translate business requirements into technical specifications and high-level designs, and provide accurate project estimates. Work option Remote Location Canada Employment Type Permanent Full Time (candidate must be authorized to work for any employer in Canada or must be a Canadian citizen) Key Responsibilities Business analysis and project scoping Customer requirements gathering: Work directly with customers across various international geographies to identify, analyze, and document business needs and project objectives. Requirements translation: Transform high-level business goals into detailed functional and technical design documents, defining project scope and technical approach for the development and GIS teams. High-level estimation: Provide accurate, high-level estimates for project scope, timelines, and budgets, including resource allocation for both onshore and offshore teams. Project documentation: Prepare clear, concise, and detailed documentation, including BRDs, FRS, and design documents. Project leadership and management Global project delivery: Oversee end-to-end delivery of complex geospatial projects, ensuring deliverables meet quality standards and customer expectations. Onshore-offshore coordination: Manage tasks across globally distributed teams, ensuring smooth communication and efficient delivery. Stakeholder communication: Act as the primary point of contact for clients, presenting project updates and technical findings. Mentorship and guidance: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to onshore and offshore GIS analysts and full-stack developers. Full-stack application and system development Application development: Lead the design, development, and deployment of interactive, web-based GIS applications using modern full-stack frameworks (e.g., React, Node.js, Python/Django). Backend services: Develop robust backend services and APIs that connect front-end applications with geospatial data sources and databases. System administration: Administer and troubleshoot GIS software and infrastructure, including Esri ArcGIS suite and open-source tools (QGIS). Data migration and management Migration strategy: Develop data migration plans for ETL from legacy systems into new environments. Data quality assurance: Ensure data integrity during migration using profiling, cleansing, and validation techniques. ETL workflow development: Design and optimize ETL workflows using tools such as FME, ArcGIS Data Interoperability, or Python scripting. Spatial database management: Manage enterprise geodatabases (e.g., PostGIS, Oracle Spatial, SQL Server), ensuring data integrity, security, and performance. System integration: Coordinate with technical teams to ensure seamless data integration with new applications. Requirements Education and experience Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in GIS, Computer Science, or a related field. 8+ years of GIS experience, with at least 3 years in a project leadership role involving global customers. Experience with the full software development lifecycle in a global onshore-offshore model. Technical Skills GIS expertise: ArcGIS and QGIS; experience with PostGIS, SQL Server, Oracle Spatial. Full-stack development: Front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React/Angular) and back-end (Python/Django, Node.js); RESTful APIs. Other tools: Git, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and familiarity with Docker. Soft Skills Strong communication and business acumen with client-facing skills. Project management: Organizational, planning, and estimation skills for global delivery. Leadership and mentorship: Ability to lead and motivate globally distributed teams.
