Overview St. Joseph’s Health Centre is looking for a Registered Practical Nurse to join our Adult Inpatient Mental Health Unit (7M). As part of an interprofessional care team working with an acute mental health and/or addictions patient population, you will deliver high‑quality, patient‑ and family‑centered nursing care within a trauma‑informed framework in an acute care setting. The unit is a 35‑bed inpatient facility, including a psychiatric intensive care unit, that serves adults 19 years and older. Affiliated with the University of Toronto, we provide holistic, accessible mental health services and pursue research, innovation, and professional development. Responsibilities Be accountable for professional practice and decision‑making. Establish therapeutic relationships with patients. Provide autonomous care for stable patients with predictable outcomes. Collaborate with team members to coordinate and communicate care activities. Advise and consult with Registered Nurses for patients with increasing instability, transferring care when necessary. Patient Care Acquire information to assess patient needs. Engage patients and families in care planning. Develop and integrate plans of care with inter‑professional activities. Use evidence‑based interventions and critical inquiry. Organize nursing care based on patient priorities. Continuously analyze data to evaluate and adjust care plans. Recognize rapid changes and collaborate with the RN for timely interventions. Provide health education tailored to patient and family learning needs. Process orders and verify them with prescribers. Document assessments and care promptly. Contribute to discharge and transition planning to ensure continuity of care. Collaboration & Coordination Organize patient care activities collaboratively with patients, families, and the inter‑professional team. Maintain respectful, therapeutic relationships across units and external partners. Coordinate seamless transitions between shifts or settings. Participate in committees to represent the RPN perspective. Leadership & Professional Development Act in accordance with professional and legal standards. Align practice with Unity Health Toronto’s vision and values. Engage in self‑reflection, performance review, and continuous learning. Mentor, teach, or coach students and colleagues. Qualifications Education & Certifications: Completion of a practical nursing diploma program (current RPNs with medication administration certificate considered). Current BCLS certificate. Professional Registration: Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Required Experience: Recent clinical experience in acute mental health nursing. Required Skills & Competencies: Excellent interpersonal and written/ verbal communication skills. Knowledge of therapeutic communication and interviewing techniques. Comprehensive understanding of major mental health disorders and treatment modalities. Knowledge of healthcare legislation relevant to mentally ill individuals. Ability to engage and educate patients and families. Physical assessment, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills. Skill in prioritizing patient care demands in a dynamic environment. Commitment to professional development. Computer literacy. Patient and family‑centered care commitment. Collaboration within interprofessional teams, independently or collectively.
