Position Description The Chief Estimator reports to the Director of Pre‑Construction and Estimating and leads the Estimating Team through the estimating process and tender closings. The role provides accurate, comprehensive cost estimates, ensures profitability, and supports business development. Responsibilities Lead the estimating team in preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for projects, covering labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and other costs. Analyze project plans, specifications, and documents to identify requirements, clarify discrepancies, and determine scope. Utilize historical cost data and industry benchmarks to inform the estimation process and ensure competitiveness. Confirm site visits and arrange attendance. Supervise and mentor the estimating team, providing guidance, support, and professional development. Conduct performance evaluations and identify training needs. Foster a collaborative and positive work environment. Oversee bid proposal preparation, ensuring timely submission. Collaborate with business development and project management teams to review bids, assess risk, and determine pricing strategies. Complete pre‑bid forms, summary sheets, bonding, and insurance submissions. Collaborate with project managers and engineers to review cost projections and identify value engineering opportunities. Maintain strong relationships with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors for competitive pricing and timely delivery. Stay current with industry trends, market conditions, and construction costs to refine estimations and bid strategies. Conduct risk analysis and implement risk‑management strategies. Organize plans and specifications for display and distribution. Prepare sub‑trade request lists for estimating assistants. Perform take‑off and quantity extensions for all trades, including cut‑and‑fill, excavation, site servicing, formwork, and concrete quantities and pricing. Attend site visits, take pictures, record notes, and interact with owners/consultants. Skills and Attributes Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong analytical and problem‑solving ability. Ability to diagnose, analyze, and develop solutions to complex issues. Work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. Self‑starter with initiative. Ability to train junior staff. Experience with unit‑rate tenders and direct unit take‑off. Ability to recap, price, and extend quantity take‑off. Capability to close a division or more during a tender. Ability to perform Class D, C, B, and A budgets and interact with clients. Qualification Requirements Engineering degree or Construction Management degree, Technical College diploma, or equivalent technical training and/or related experience. Knowledge of CCDC5 and CCDC14. Minimum 10 years of construction estimating experience in ICI construction or equivalent. Deep knowledge of construction methods, materials, and best practices. Computer literate, proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, Project, and design‑build. Proven ability to manage tender closings successfully. Thorough knowledge of technology, equipment, methods, estimating, budgeting, scheduling, and safety requirements. Gold Seal Certified (asset). LEED Accredited (asset). Procore and BIM software knowledge (asset). Working Conditions Primary work location: Head Office. Assist Buttcon East Limited when required.
