Network Specialist (CyberSecurity) (961-02) Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/SEFPO) Location: Information Technology Unit, Finance & Operations Division, OPSEU/SEFPO Head Office, 100 Lesmill Road, Toronto, ON, M3B 3P8 Reporting to: Supervisor, Information Technology Unit Salary: $2,054.00 to $2,281.00 per week (Range 4 – Pro‑Tech, subject to evaluation by the JJEC) Working Conditions: As provided in the OPSSU/OPSEU/SEFPO Collective Agreement Deploys, secures, maintains, and optimizes enterprise network infrastructure components including firewalls, switches, VPNs, wireless systems, and IDS/IPS to ensure resilient, compliant, and threat‑aware connectivity across all platforms. This position requires a strong understanding of network protocols, cybersecurity tools, and best practices to uphold the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of networked systems. Responsibilities Manage and maintain organization’s network and cybersecurity infrastructure, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems and data across cloud and on‑prem environments. Maintain and support servers, FortiGate firewalls, switches, routers, wireless infrastructure, and endpoint protection tools. Manage SSL/TLS certificate lifecycles and maintain secure DNS and domain controller configurations. Design and implement threat detection, hunting, and incident response strategies using SentinelOne, Microsoft Defender, ESET, and FortiGate. Monitor and analyse logs from firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, content filters, Windows/Linux systems, and SIEM platforms to identify and mitigate internal and external threats. Lead remediation efforts from audits, threat intelligence, incidents, and cybersecurity assessments. Enhance organizational readiness by participating in disaster recovery simulations, incident response drills, and tabletop exercises; contribute to the development and automation of security playbooks and risk assessment workflows. Maintain and improve security documentation, including guidelines, standards, and operational procedures, while actively monitoring emerging cyber threats to inform and update defensive strategies. Promote security awareness by helping lead employee training sessions focused on phishing prevention and other common cyber threats. Collaborate with other members of the cybersecurity team to develop new protocols, layers of protection, and other proactive and defensive systems for remaining ahead of cybercriminals. Support Microsoft 365 administration, including Security and Compliance Centre monitoring, Managing data loss prevention (DLP) and retention policies. Reviewing conditional access and MFA configurations. Administering Exchange Online Protection (EOP) and Defender for Office 365. Integrate cybersecurity best practices into infrastructure and cloud modernization projects by collaborating with cross‑functional teams to ensure secure design, deployment, and operations. Automate routine security operations, enforce secure configuration baselines, and support vulnerability management and patch deployment across platforms. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or related field, and a minimum of three years of related work experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience). Proficient in enterprise security tools (e.g., SentinelOne, Microsoft Defender, ESET, FortiGate) with hands‑on experience in threat detection, prevention, SIEM platforms, and incident response. Hands‑on experience with SIEM tools, log analysis, incident detection, and response. Strong understanding of cybersecurity frameworks (NIST, CIS) and Ontario‑specific compliance requirements, including PHIPA, PIPEDA, FIPPA, and the Ontario Cyber Security Framework (OCSF). Solid knowledge of network security, IAM, MFA, Microsoft 365 security and compliance features, and scripting (PowerShell, Bash) for automation and baseline enforcement. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to investigate and resolve complex security incidents. Knowledge of OPSEU/SEFPO organization, structure and policies; knowledge of the IT Unit as well as familiarity with the operations of other Units. Understanding of and commitment to labour movement and social democratic philosophy. Understanding of and commitment to the principles of anti‑racism, equity, diversity and inclusion.
