The Seniors Division provides a number of financial assistance programs to support seniors with low income to meet their basic needs, afford essential health and personal supports, and age safely in their homes. More information is available online at
Role ResponsibilitiesThe Director, Senior Strategic and Program Support leads policy development and research on issues related to Alberta's aging population. This role involves engaging stakeholders, representing the ministry in cross-government initiatives, and advising senior leadership on strategic decisions that impact seniors.
Key responsibilities include:
- Policy and Legislative Leadership: Review and approve proposed changes to policies, legislation, and regulations. Provide expert advice and support to resolve complex issues and develop sustainable, long-term solutions for seniors.
- Program Oversight: Ensure program reviews are strategically planned and prioritized in alignment with broader government policy objectives and stakeholder needs.
- Elder Abuse Prevention: Lead the development and implementation of elder abuse policies and action plans grounded in evidence-based research. Collaborate with communities, service providers, and other government departments to prevent elder abuse. Support local initiatives through grant funding and contribute to cross-government efforts addressing family violence.
- Intergovernmental Engagement: Represent Alberta in the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Ministers Responsible for Seniors Forum, ensuring Alberta's interests are reflected in work plans and deliverables. Support the Minister and Deputy Minister's participation by preparing briefing materials, actively engaging in the Officials Committee, and guiding staff contributions to working groups.
- Strategic Planning and Coordination: Provide strategic advice to senior leaders to inform decisions and responses. Contribute to branch planning and reporting by summarizing policy and program outcomes. Collaborate across branches, divisions, and departments to improve programs, coordinate services, and identify innovative approaches to service delivery.
- Leadership Support: Serve as Acting Executive Director when required, ensuring continuity in leadership and strategic direction.
This role requires a strategic thinker with strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills, and a deep understanding of seniors' issues and government policy processes.

University degree in Public Policy, Arts, Social Sciences, Business or a related field and four years of experience. Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on:
• Related university degree and 4 years related experience
• Related Diploma and 6 years related experience
• Related certificate and 7 years related experience

• Hours of work are 36.25 weekly, Monday to Friday.
• This competition will be used to fill a permanent position in Edmonton. The position is full-time.
