Job Summary:
Working primarily out of North Vancouver, occasional travel to Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton may be required. The Saw Operator assists utility vegetation management crews and contractors engaged in the removal of vegetation from proximity to high voltage electrical conductors, while promoting safety awareness. Considerable independence, safety consciousness, and an ability to follow instructions and demonstrate sound judgement are exercised as a part of this job.
The Saw Operator is an entry-level position in ILP's Vegetation Management Department. A demonstrated ability to learn, develop professionally, and work effectively as a part of a team will lead to consideration in eventually developing the successful candidate as an Apprentice Utility Arborist.
The Saw Operator is assigned to multiple duties related to vegetation management and tree services work, including but not limited to:
- Working as part of vegetation management/utility arborist crew.
- Assisting in line clearing and tree trimming crews for major electric utility companies.
- Providing urban forestry and tree services in residential, urban, and parkland settings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Removal/ bucking/ slashing/ pruning of woody plants, trees and debris in utility corridors, urban areas, and parkland settings.
- Basic to advanced use of chainsaws, pruning saws, and related arborist equipment.
- Assist with the maintenance and operation of field equipment.
- Attend safety meetings/ training courses/ undertake professional development.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent preferred.
- Proven experience with chainsaw operation preferred, but not essential (training provided, but documented saw use training is an asset).
- Valid driver's license.
- Level 2 First Aid preferred, but not essential (training provided).
- Ability to apply key safety principles to all work duties.
- Punctual, responsible, diligent, and respectful in interactions with crew and the public.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from multiple senior crew members.
- Ability to work in a team environment, especially in relation to crew safety and well-being.
- Basic computer literacy: email, operating systems (Windows), and web platforms.
Working Conditions:
Physical
- Extensive outdoor work in various weather conditions, including rain, snow, and heat.
- Frequent walking, standing, and navigating uneven terrain at work sites.
- Frequent lifting and carrying of field equipment, and materials.
- Possible exposure to contaminants (e.g., fuel) requiring proper handling and cleanup.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as boots, gloves, and safety gear.
Psychological
- Attention to detail required for accurate field observations and reporting.
- Ability to focus and remain organized while handling multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
- Critical thinking skills; will assess environmental conditions and recommend appropriate safe work actions.
- Ability to remain calm, composed and professional while addressing unexpected challenges in the field.
Travel: Out-of-town travel may be required for meetings, training, and fieldwork
Working Hours: 40 hours a week with occasional overtime
Expected Start Date: As soon as possible; willing to wait for the right candidate
Compensation: $ $28.00 per hour, with benefits, 2 weeks' paid vacation to start, and pension matching up to 5.5%
