Transition & Housing Manager

The Transition & Housing Manager (THM) is a full-time position. The THM reports to the Executive Director and has two direct reports – the Transition & Housing Associate (THA) and Health & Wellness Associate (HWA). The THM will be responsible for managing the following programs: Transitional Housing, Aandaajmod (Change One's Story), and will maintain good working relationships with all facilitators and organizations engaged to assist with all programs across Nakehndan.
The Transition & Housing Manager will be the first point of contact when receiving referrals for new clients and residents. The THM will conduct a needs assessment and detailed review of all services with new clients and create a collaborative Wellness Plan that the clients will follow while at Nakehndan. Additionally, the THM will perform all coordination of resident move-in, maintaining a good working relationship with all clients, ensuring all supports at Nakehndan are utilized. The THM will then introduce the tenant to the other Associates who coordinate identified services and share the Wellness Plan. The THM will communicate with other staff regularly to monitor the progress of tenants and provide feedback to the ED on any issues that might impact tenant satisfaction and the benefits of services. This position will be the second point of contact for any issues that the THA or HWA are not able to resolve.
This position may require you to work evenings and weekends. It may also require you to work in a stressful environment, sometimes dealing with women in crisis situations. The ability to function flexibly, independently, and under pressure while managing situations, including emergencies, is an ongoing expectation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receives, reviews, and makes recommendations on all referrals to Nakehndan, including housing and general services
- Meets with clients to create Wellness Plans and discuss pathways to success
- Manages and oversees housing placements
- Actively searches for funding opportunities that would allow for new transitional housing units to be acquired
- Establishes relationships with the community and community agencies
- Meet with community partners to discuss program collaborations and housing opportunities
- Coordinate and plan for the Aandaajmod program, including but not limited to Financial Literacy Training, Leadership Skills, Employment Readiness, and self-defense
- Work in partnership with the THA in supporting clients to find long-term housing once the client has graduated from Nakendan services
- Maintains respectful, effective, open, and honest communication with clients and staff
- Provides organization support, including facilitation to maintain good relations between staff

- Management of the privacy and security of the Transitional Housing Units and clients
- Maintains confidentiality, privacy, and record keeping following Nakehndan Policies
- Assists in the recruitment, selection, and training of new staff
- Provide input and recommendations to the Executive Director for project proposals and toolkit development
- Holds monthly check-ins with staff and provides guidance and coaching; evaluates the performance of program staff and identifies needs regarding personal and professional development
- Ensures all required reporting is fully completed, copied to appropriate individuals/agencies, and filed
- Ensures operating budgets are managed on a zero balance annually according to funding requirements, and assists the Executive Director in the preparation of the annual budget
- May represent Nakehndan at community events and meetings
- Implements and evaluates program planning, objectives, policies, and procedures
- From time to time may be asked to administer different projects as they arise
- Other duties as assigned by the ED
Skills and Ability
- Excellent ability to deal professionally, effectively, and non-judgmentally with a broad range of personalities, needs, cultures, and abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills:
- Solid time management skills, with the ability to complete and prioritize a variety of tasks within a given timeline, with adherence to important deadlines
- Accurately track and submit program expenses, invoices, and other financial records
- Computer-literate and have a solid understanding of Microsoft Office and the use of Google Workplace.
- Ability to speak confidently in front of groups, including strong presentation skills
- Ability to delegate tasks and work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Progressive understanding of persistent mental illness, addictions, and other challenges, and how these issues impact overall health, well-being, and quality of life.
- Understanding of the intergenerational trauma that occurs as a result of colonization, Residential Schools, Sixties Scoop, and other oppressive systems, as well as the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Qualifications
- Required to produce a favourable Vulnerable Sector Check
- Required valid Driver's License and access to an insured vehicle
- Degree in Social Work or related field
- Minimum of five years of management experience in housing or a related field
- Certification in Mental Health First Aid, suicide prevention, and/or restorative practice with Anishinaabe populations is considered an asset
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of management experience in the housing field
- Required experience in working cooperatively and non-judgmentally with people with lived experience, mental health, etc.
- Required experience working with Indigenous peoples and an awareness of the impacts of colonization.
- Required experience in dealing with Anishinaabe/Indigenous family dynamics and Anishinaabe/Indigenous communities.
- Required knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, traditions, ceremonies, and teachings
- Preference given to those with experience working with survivors of Sexual Assault (SA), Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), Gender Based Violence (GBV), and Human Trafficking (HT)
- Preference given to those with experience working with non-profit organizations, family support, social services, and/or related fields.
- Preference given to those with knowledge (working or fluent) of Anishinaabemowin
