Women's Resources of Kawartha Lakes (WRKL) provides trauma-informed, feminist, anti-oppressive services to women and gender-diverse survivors of gender-based violence. We are committed to safety, empowerment, and systemic advocacy across the City of Kawartha Lakes.
Position Summary
The Transition Family Court Worker (TFCW) provides one-to-one, trauma-informed support to clients who have experienced or experiencing abuse and navigating the Family Court system. This position supports survivors around Family Court processes, housing, employment, wellness, community connections, and safety planning.
This role also engages in community outreach, education, and partnerships to enhance access to services, strengthen community relationships, and promote WRKL's mission throughout the region.
All duties are delivered through an anti-oppressive, feminist, client-centred approach consistent with WRKL's Reason for Being and Beliefs and Aims.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Family Court Support
· Provide clear, accessible information about the Family Court process and relevant Family Law matters.
· Support clients in preparing for legal proceedings (timelines, documentation, abuse histories).
· Assist with intake, safety planning and risk assessments; support safe transportation to/from court appointments.
· Accompany clients to meetings with lawyers, Duty Counsel, FLIC, and court appearances.
· Support applications for Emergency/Temporary Custody and Access.
· Debrief and explain outcomes of court or legal meetings to help clients understand next steps.
· Provide emotional support, grounding techniques, and anxiety-management strategies.
· Assist clients with Legal Aid processes and eligibility assessment; respond to lawyer documentation requests.
· Attend Case Conferences when appropriate.
· Advocate for clients within the family and criminal justice systems.
· Offer referrals to internal and external supports (e.g., Outreach Counselling, therapy, transitional housing, Indigenous supports, employment resources, mental health services).
2. Community Outreach & Transitional Support
· Assist clients in developing realistic, attainable goals to achieve safety, independence, and wellness.
· Provide non-judgmental support, positive encouragement, and informal counselling using feminist principles.
· Help clients access community resources including legal, medical, financial, housing, employment, childcare, and wellness supports.
· Support clients in finding and maintaining safe housing, employment, and healthy social networks.
· Assist women transitioning to subsidized housing or related programs.
· Facilitate and coordinate referrals to community services and advocate on clients' behalf.
· Maintain cooperative working relationships with community partners and develop new connections.
· Coordinate and co-facilitate support groups, workshops and information tables across the County.
3. Recordkeeping, Reporting & Program Support
· Maintain accurate client records, case files, statistics, and reports as required.
· Prepare statistical reports and contribute to program evaluation activities.
· Participate in supervision sessions, staff meetings, and in-service training.
· Assist with the orientation of new staff, students, contract workers, or volunteers.
· Ensure confidentiality is maintained in accordance with agency policies and legal standards.
· Represent WRKL positively through public speaking, community events, and professional relationships.
Qualifications & Skills
· Post-secondary degree or diploma is social work, social services or a related field
· Strong understanding of power and control dynamics, gender-based and intimate partner violence, and trauma-informed practice.
· Commitment to feminist, anti-oppressive, and anti-racist frameworks.
· Knowledge of Family Court processes, Family Law basics, and community legal supports (preferred).
· Experience with crisis intervention, advocacy, and safety planning.
· Knowledge of brief, solution-focused counselling techniques.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
· Knowledge of community agencies and ability to develop collaborative relationships.
· Experience facilitating groups is an asset.
· Ability to work independently in the community and as part of a team.
· Ability to maintain an impartial, non-judgmental, client-centred approach.
· Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
· Commitment to ongoing personal growth and self-reflection.
· Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle required (travel across Kawartha Lakes).
