Position Purpose
Citxw Nlaka'pamux Assembly (CNA) was created in 2013 as a powerful and unifying voice for eight Nlaka'pamux Bands regarding the Teck Highland Valley Copper Mine. It is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the eight Participating Bands. Headquartered in Merritt, BC, with a workforce of over 40, CNA provides training and job readiness along with cultural, social, and technical programming to the over 3035 members of the eight Participating Bands.
The ʔesknstwexʷ Department is seeking a dedicated ʔesknstwexʷ General Clerk to provide comprehensive support to our ʔesknstwexʷ Advisors, respected knowledge keepers in our community. This role requires a culturally aware individual with a strong understanding of nłeʔkepmxcín; and will assist the Advisors in various capacities to ensure their needs are met in all aspects of their work.
Primary Duties
- Accompany the ʔesknstwexʷ Advisors in their daily activities, providing on-the-spot executive-level support and assistance, including but not limited to managing schedules and logistics,
- Take detailed notes during meetings, discussions, and cultural events to document insights and decisions made by the ʔesknstwexʷ Advisors, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality,
- Prepare necessary materials and resources, ensuring that the ʔesknstwexʷ Advisors have everything they need for successful engagement with the community and at events,
- Foster open communication with the ʔesknstwexʷ Advisors, being attentive to their needs and preferences, and adapting to the dynamic nature of their work,
- Engage sensitively with community members and stakeholders, listening to and facilitating discussions around lived experiences, cultural practices, and language use,
- Support the organization of cultural and language initiatives led by the ʔesknstwexʷ Advisors, ensuring that all events reflect the values of our community and respect traditional practices,
- Maintain a respectful and supportive environment that encourages the sharing of knowledge and promotes cultural preservation, and
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the ʔesknstwexʷ Manager.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Exceptional organizational and communication skills,
- Ability to work collaboratively and foster positive relationships with elders, families, and community members,
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills,
- Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion,
- Knowledge of and experience in working with Indigenous heritage, language, and traditional practices,
- Willingness to learn nłeʔkepmx cultural values and protocols while recognizing and respecting cultural diversity, and
- Strong ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and manage time, with solid computer skills, and proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft Office productivity software.
Experience and Requirements
- Strong understanding of nłeʔképmx culture and nłeʔkepmxcín,
- Willingness to travel for work with a valid BC Class 5 driver's license and with access to a personal vehicle,
- Willingness to complete and pass a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC), and
- Willingness to submit a Driver's Abstract with a score of 1,000 or less.
Work Environment
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:30 am-4:30 pm, with a 1-hour lunch, with regular flexibility required for events and meetings in evenings and weekends. On average, 35 hours per week,
- Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be banked at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be banked at 2x,
- Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the CNA Office at 2025 Granite Ave. Merritt BC,
- Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
- Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
- Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
- Pension: Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service), and
