Employment Status Full Time Employment Type Fixed Term Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Director, CNC Research Forest, or designate, this position will assist CNC research staff involved in various applied research activities or Research Forest operations, either in the office or in the field. The position is integral to supporting CNC's endeavour to achieve reliable research data and findings.
Specific Duties
- Assist with undertaking various measurements and assessments of research samples and sites.
- Accurately record research or assessment data via written or digital formats.
- Recognize and respond to safety hazards in various workplaces. Report safety incidents to the supervisor and offer recommendations for improvements to worker health and safety.
- Collect field information in support of various research activities.
- Download digital data from research monitoring stations.
- Assist with assembling, installing, and maintaining research equipment and sites.
- Assist with preparing and organizing for daily research activities.
- Assist with collecting, storing, and assessing research samples, such as plants and other biological materials.
- Safe operation of tools and equipment related to research projects.
- Provide periodic guidance to Student Assistants regarding research methods, assessment protocols, field operations, and safety protocols, as directed by supervisor.
- Assist with transcribing field research information into digital data, sorting data, and cleaning data.
- Assist with literature reviews, market research, and research surveys under the guidance of experienced researchers.
- Assistant research staff with organizing safe and rewarding student learning and research activities associated within the CNC region.
- Assist with preparation and delivery of demonstration tours within various research sites.
- You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners and communities.
- You will promote a positive work atmosphere, communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect for students and colleagues.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
- Successful completion of the first year of a post-secondary program specific to the research project, and currently in good stand with a post-secondary institution.
- 6 months or more experience within a relevant industry
Outdoor Research: Fieldwork experience in forest ecosystems within a relevant industry
Must have Class 7 ("N" status) or higher valid driver's license; a driver's abstract and license will be required.
- Must have Basic First Aid certification, or be willing to obtain within 3 months of hire.
- Must be willing to obtain additional required safety and training certificates as necessary to comply with the College's safety plan and other requirements (e.g., WorkSafe BC).
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively and professionally communicate with supervisors and fellow employees.
- Able to efficiently use MS Office/365 software, including Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel.
- Able to digitally sort and clean research data.
- Familiarity with or willingness to train to use equipment, instruments, and tools related to an assigned CNC research project.
Outdoor Research Additional Specific Skills:
- Must have Basic First Aid certification with transportation endorsement or be willing to obtain within 3 months of hire.
- Good knowledge of outdoor safety procedures.
- Ability to work in demanding outdoor environment.
- Physical ability to complete the demands of the position.
- Able to use a map, compass, and GPS to navigate outdoors.
- Ability to reliably collect in situ natural resources samples.
- Able to identify common trees and plants to the species level.
- Familiarity with the British Columbia Biogeoclimatic classification system and the Canadian System of Soil Classification.
- Experience completing relevant natural resource measurements and assessments.
- Able to safely operate an all-terrain vehicle on rough resource roads and trails or be willing to obtain training.

Additional Appointment Details
Intended as unique work experience opportunities for current post-secondary students studying forestry and natural resources. Jobs are focused on forest and vegetation measurements and field data collection within CNC Research Forest and other forested sites near Prince George. The positions require daily travel from the CNC Prince George campus to various research sites across the Prince George Natural Resource District. The research projects often involve field data related to the ecological, wildlife, and plant/tree growth responses resulting from forest treatments. Assistants will also be involved data collection from multiple climate stations and be assisting with the examination and measurement of small planting trials involving deciduous and coniferous trees.
Employment beyond August 31, 2025 may be available to students not returning school in September, but is dependent on satisfactory job performance, ongoing workload, and budget considerations.
