Position Summary

Reporting to a Fire Captain or Station Chief, Paid Per Call Firefighters help with extinguishing fires, performing rescues, providing medical aid, and handling other fire and life safety duties. They're expected to respond quickly, work efficiently, and stay safe in situations that can be dangerous. They also help with fire prevention, public safety education, and protecting lives and property. Day-to-day work includes keeping the station, vehicles and equipment in good shape.

Philosophy

Rocky View County Fire Services is a composite fire service consisting of full-time, part-time and paid-per-call (volunteer) employees. This staffing model meets the needs of the County and reflects the commitment of both the County and that of its various communities and residents. This commitment to a composite model is unwavering and must be understood and embraced by all fire personnel.

Core Duties

  • Respond to fires, vehicle accidents, and all kinds of emergency calls — helping keep people safe and reducing injuries.
  • Work with your team to run hoses, control water streams, climb ladders, and use the tools and gear needed to put out fires and handle emergencies.
  • Drive and operate fire trucks and other equipment when needed.
  • Stay in great shape — the job can be physically demanding and involves lifting, climbing, and cardio fitness.
  • Keep vehicles, tools, and medical equipment in top condition so they're always ready to go.
  • Help prevent fires by doing safety checks, inspections, and community visits.
  • Visit schools and local events to share fire and life safety tips.
  • Be involved in community programs and events.

Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Class 5 Driver's License (non-GDL).
  • Minimal infractions on a 5-year commercial driver's abstract
  • Reside and/or work within 15 minutes' drive (at posted limits) of the fire station.
  • Satisfactory completion of a medical examination.
  • Clean Criminal Record.
  • Be able to lift and carry heavy gear when needed — such as carrying 20–40 lbs of equipment up stairs while wearing about 50 lbs of protective gear or dragging someone weighing over 200 lbs during a rescue.
  • Have good vision, hearing, movement, and coordination to handle both everyday and unexpected firefighting tasks.
  • Stay calm and focused under pressure.

  • Regularly attend weekly evening training.
  • Attend weekend training courses - essential over the first 6 months.
  • Be available and attend calls from the community.
  • Be part of building a positive team atmosphere at the Fire Station.
