The Department of Companion Animals at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island, invites applications for two (2) full-time faculty positions in companion animal emergency and critical care. Appointments will be made at the Lecturer level. Appointments will be for 1 year with the possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance.

The successful candidates will play a foundational role in supporting and leading the existing referral and primary Emergency Services and advancing the clinical and preclinical curriculum in Emergency and Critical Care of Companion Animals, including exotic pets. The successful candidates will work with the primary care and referral Emergency Services within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). This service is supported by emergency veterinarians, rotating interns, experienced triage technicians, ICU technicians, and administrative staff. Duties will include preclinical and clinical curricular advancement and teaching in undergraduate (DVM) and graduate programs, providing clinical service in the VTH (approximately 28 weeks per year), scholarly activities including primary research, and service to the University. The successful candidates will have primary responsibility for clinical cases in their service, supervise rotating interns, collaborate with clinical services for case management, and work with administration on policy and procedure development for the emergency service and intensive care unit. The clinical schedule will be organized in shifts, mostly during regular business hours.

Services and technology supporting the ECC service include, but are not limited to, digital radiography, point of care ultrasonography, advanced imaging (1.5T MRI, 128-Slice CT), multi-parameter monitoring systems, an on-site reference laboratory, and an in-house blood bank. The 24 cage ICU is currently managed in an open style with all services providing primary care, utilizing a collaborative approach to maximize case management.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a DVM (or equivalent) degree
  • Have a minimum of 3 years of primary companion animal emergency experience in a fast-paced, high-volume emergency clinic or academic service
  • Be strongly motivated to teach
  • Have a track record of excellent clinical services in companion animal emergency and critical care
  • Have well-developed skills of collaboration, relationship-building, and communication
  • Be a life-long learner, eager to maintain skills and knowledge updated to contemporary standards in companion animal medicine and veterinary education
  • Be eligible for licensure with the Prince Edward Island Veterinary Medical Association.

Preference will be given to candidates with additional training and/or certification in emergency and critical care veterinary medicine. A graduate degree is desirable but not mandatory.

The salary range is commensurate with credentials and experience. Full-time permanent faculty members receive a comprehensive fringe benefit package with benefit details provided at time of offer in accordance with the Collective Agreement. Paid study time will be provided if needed to achieve board certification. This appointment is subject to budgetary approval.
