Position Overview

Axis Mechanical is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Prime Mechanical/Plumbing Estimator to join our growing Calgary team. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for a wide range of plumbing projects. You will analyze drawings and specifications, evaluate labour, materials, and equipment costs, and collaborate with project managers, engineers, and suppliers to ensure all bids are complete, competitive, and aligned with company goals. This position is suited to a motivated professional with strong technical knowledge and a passion for excellence in the mechanical construction industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret project drawings, specifications, and tender documents.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate estimates for plumbing systems in commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential projects.
  • Conduct material take-offs and obtain supplier and subcontractor pricing.
  • Analyze labour requirements, productivity factors, and schedule impacts.
  • Identify risks, value-engineering opportunities, and cost-saving measures.
  • Prepare tender submissions, proposals, and budgets within deadlines.
  • Collaborate with project managers and engineers during pre-construction and project handover phases.
  • Monitor project costs throughout the lifecycle to ensure adherence to budgets.
  • Maintain and update estimating databases, pricing lists, and cost histories.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and liaise with clients, consultants, and vendors as required.
  • Ensure all estimates comply with company standards, local building codes, and safety regulations.
  • Monitor project costs throughout the lifecycle to ensure adherence to budgets.
  • Provide support during the bidding process, including preparing bid proposals and presenting estimates to clients.
  • Maintain organized records of all estimates, revisions, and related documentation.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Journeyperson Plumber certification, Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in plumbing estimating within the construction or mechanical contracting industry.
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, materials, codes, and construction practices.
  • Proficiency with estimating software (such as Trimble, Bluebeam, PlanSwift, QuoteSoft or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with clients, suppliers, and internal teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to build relationships with vendors and clients.
  • Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail to ensure accuracy in estimates.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while managing multiple projects simultaneously.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $70,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
