Job Summary

Dalhousie Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) is the premier Maritime location for advanced study with over 3,500 graduate students in a research-intensive environment who can choose from over 95 Master's degrees and more than 45 Doctoral programs. Students learn with top professors in their fields; experts who are recognized across Canada and the world. Reporting to the Dean, the Senior Manager, Professional Development and Student Engagement provides leadership and expertise at an institutional and Faculty level to oversee operations, assessment, and facilitation of professional development programming and student engagement activities ensuring that they are holistic and inclusive. They collaborate and foster relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators across the university and off-campus partners to champion and advocate for an exceptional and equitable graduate student and post-doctoral scholar experience at Dalhousie.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivers programming with partners and assesses outcomes of the formal Faculty of Graduate Studies' professional development programming for graduate students and post-doctoral scholars (e.g. GradPD Certificate program, 3MT programming).
  • Implements student engagement plans to support student transition and success (: Grad Edition orientation and mentorship program; BIPOC Mentoring Academy; Co-Curricular record).
  • Provides educational resources such as workshops, training materials, and panel discussions that utilize evidence-based practices to encourage innovative thinking and inclusivity to support engagement and student experience.
  • Oversees, engages, and monitors data collection on ongoing programming to evaluate existing programming and/or develop new programming or supports to address gaps and meet evolving needs.
  • Research, monitors, and advises on trends and developments on best practices around professional development, including those being pursued by peer U15 universities to inform strategic development and programming and to bring new approaches to Dalhousie.
  • Hires and supervises two full-time staff and up to ten student assistants. Provides coaching, training, and employee development by conducting regular and ongoing performance reviews.

Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work from within Nova Scotia) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree with three to five years' experience in the design, facilitation and delivery of student engagement and professional development programming for graduate students and/or post-doctoral scholars (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Experience working in a university setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and engagement in teaching, and the graduate student experience. Proven interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
