About the Role:

The successful person will play a key role in promoting fire and life safety in the community through inspection and delivery of public education initiatives.   

What You'll be Doing:
  • Preparing reports and issue Fire Inspection Orders and maintain records detailing information about the property, identifying non-compliance issues and follow-up.
  • Reviews and provides comments on fire safety plans.
  • Initiates prosecutions and provides testimony and evidence in court.
  • Conducting fire and life safety inspections (complaint, request and routine) in all type of occupancies to ensure compliance with all required Codes, Standards, By-laws and Fire Marshal Directives.
  • Conduct fire scene investigations for origin and cause and liaise with all other agencies that may be involved in the investigation including the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management, Niagara Regional Police, Electrical Safety Authority and TSSA.
  • Prepares and presents seminars and implements fire safety programs within the community.
  • Monitors and assesses fire drills.
  • Conducts portable fire extinguisher training to internal/external stakeholders.
  • Record all investigations accurately and in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Develops and participates in public education and public relations activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What's Required:
  • Advanced Diploma in Fire Inspection and Fire Safety Education or Post-Secondary education in Fire Protection Technology in the field of fire protection or related discipline.
  • Preference will be given to applicants that possess certification in NFPA 1031, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner Level I and II ; NFPA 1035 Standard on Fire and Life Safety Educator, Public Information Officer , Youth Fire-setter Intervention Specialist and Youth Fire-setter Program Manager Professional Qualifications Level I and II ; NFPA 1033 Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator, and NFPA 921, Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations.
  • Sound knowledge of Ontario Fire and Building Codes and other fire protection standards, codes, and regulations coupled with an understanding of technical and operational aspects of sprinkler, standpipe, fire alarm and voice communication systems, hazardous materials, and other factors relating to fire protection.
  • Background in conducting inspections, the ability to interpret building construction, design drawings and experience in the delivery of educational programs are valuable assets.
  • Background in developing and implementing public education/ relations activities including training staff.
  • Previous experience in the development and delivery of public education programming.
  • Ability to work rotational on-call responsibilities with other staff for fire scene investigation.
  • Must be willing to complete any courses necessary as part of the Fire Prevention Certification process, including Ontario Building Code courses within the first three years of employment.
  • Attend any other relevant courses/training required for the performance of his/her duties.
  • Operational level of computer proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Valid Ontario driver's licence is required.
