Manager, Breeding and Canine Care

Location: Delta, BC

Position Type: Full-Time, On-Site

Are you a compassionate and skilled RVT with a love for dogs and puppies? BC and Alberta Guide Dogs is seeking a Manager, Breeding and Canine Care to join our dedicated team. In this pivotal role, you will ensure the health, welfare, and development of our breeding dogs, puppies, and program graduate dogs. Working closely with our Director of Breeding and Canine Care, you will play a vital role in guiding these remarkable dogs on their journey to become life-changing companions for individuals with little or no sight, children with autism and veterans & first responders with OSI-PTSD.

The mission of the BC & Alberta Guide Dogs team is to meet the growing demand for professionally trained Guide Dogs, Autism Service Dogs, and OSI (Operational Stress Injury)-PTSD Service Dogs for citizens of British Columbia and Alberta. At all times, we meet or exceed international standards as established by the International Guide Dog Federation and Assistance Dogs International.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and provide health care for breeding dogs, puppies, and program dogs as outlined by the International Guide Dog Federation Standards and the Policies of BC & Alberta Guide Dogs
  • Be part of a team that oversees the breeding, whelping, and early puppy care processes.
  • Teach, support and oversee volunteers assisting with puppy care and socialization.
  • Coordinate and schedule volunteer activities and work schedules.
  • Maintain meticulous records and schedules related to breeding and health care.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Breeding and Health Care to ensure best practices.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, volunteers, and veterinary professionals.
  • Follow and ensure that all protocols are following pertaining to, infectious disease management and protocols
  • This position will entail day and night shifts, weekend shifts and on call work.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).
  • Proven experience in a veterinary practice with knowledge of current veterinary health procedures.
  • Hands-on experience with breeding and whelping an advantage.
  • Knowledge of canine genetics an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills, including planning, time management and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities working with both team members and volunteers.
  • Comfortable teaching and mentoring volunteers.
