The purpose of this Lodge is to provide enhanced transitional support in a safe environment for regional mental health and Mental Health & the Law patients who are ready to begin their re-integration into the community. The multi-disciplinary team assists individuals in developing goals and plans to enable a self-defined successful and satisfying community reintegration through evidenced based groups and programming. Patients referred from the Mental Health & the Law program must have community living within their disposition order.
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months)
- Current Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certificate required
- Knowledge of Forensic Nursing including risk management as well as knowledge working with the provisions of the Forensic legal framework: Section XX.I of the Criminal Code of Canada required
- Minimum (2-3 years) experience working with individuals with serious mental illness in forensics system & Criminal Code of Canada (within the last 2-3 years) is an asset
- Knowledge and experience providing specialized programming including the facilitation of groups for individuals living with serious and persistent mental health challenges and dual diagnosis
- Knowledge of Recovery Oriented Practice Supporting Patient Choice required
- Extensive knowledge of psychiatric disorders and an understanding of the interface between psychiatry and the law as it applies to the patient's mental illness, Ontario Review Board (ORB) disposition order and community reintegration required
- Knowledge and proven experience in the interpretation and application of pertinent forensic mental health legislation
- Must be able to respond and fully participate in all codes (White, Red, etc.) required
- Knowledge of consent and capacity issues and legislation involving this population (e.g. Public Guardian Trustee, Substitute Decision Maker Act, Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act).
- Knowledge about Youth Criminal Justice Act
- Ability to negotiate a common resolution to problems within a varying group of health professionals
- Demonstrated knowledge of psychotropic medications, symptom management and health teaching required
- Proficiency in conducting Mental Status Exams is required
- Cultural competency with First Nation/Indigenous and multicultural patient population is an asset
- Valid G driver's license for extensive travel within the catchment area required
- Ministry of Transportation driver's abstract required
Skills/Abilities:
- Must demonstrate excellent level of interpersonal skills
- Must demonstrate excellent level of written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, clients, families, regional support services and community partners required
- Ability to provide health teaching to individuals and groups required
- Must be committed to continuing education on an annual basis and demonstrate commitment to quality improvement required
- Ability to effectively assume a leadership role as a collaborative member of the health team required
- Ability to assume responsibility for patient care in a total patient care climate required
- Able to meet the physical demands required to provide nursing care to all patients required
- Ability to problem-solve and function in fast-paced environment required
- Excellent demonstrated assessment, critical thinking and intervention skills required
- Must demonstrate basic computer knowledge
- Must demonstrate commitment to ensure personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
- Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required
- Must demonstrate good attendance and work record
- Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is an asset
