As the Utilities Planning Specialist, you will be responsible for ensuring that The City of Calgary property and citizens are safeguarded in terms of placement of shallow utility lines. Primary duties include:
- Provide planning, consultative, problem solving, and technical information services related to utility line placement to both external and internal clients for the purpose of establishing policies, procedures, and standards for customized development initiatives.
- Approve utility line placement applications for property owned by The City of Calgary.
- Approve borehole, tree planting and shoring applications within City Road rights of way.
- Execute Corporate Planning Applications Group (CPAG) circulation reviews, as well as Transportation and City Utility reviews.
- Develop and maintain a relationship with industry groups and various levels of government to maintain knowledge of current standards and legislative changes.
- Provide statistical data analysis of activities and trends for benchmarking and the production of performance metrics.
- Conduct field site inspections as required.
Qualifications
- A completed 2-year diploma in Architectural Technology, Engineering Design and Drafting Technology, Applied Geographic Information Systems, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in utility planning and installation environment.
- Intermediate proficiency in MicroStation is required.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, or a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, with no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, and Excel) would be considered assets.
- The ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- An Understanding of the City of Calgary business operations and experience with City Design for Subdivision Servicing (DGSS), The City's Liveable Streets guidelines, and other City Standards and specifications will be considered an asset.
- Success in this position requires strong communication, problem solving, negotiation and facilitation skills.

Workstyle: This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
