Position: Crisis Worker

Department: Nipissing Crisis Intervention

The Crisis Intervention team provides 24/7 mental health assessments, support, and referral services, with Crisis Workers stationed in the Emergency Department and staffing a round-the-clock crisis phone line. The role supports psychiatric consultations in the ED, participates in Mobile Crisis outreach alongside local police, and delivers clinical expertise and case management through the Community Crisis Outreach Program. This position plays a key part in community partnerships, justice system collaboration, and connecting individuals to essential mental health and addiction support during times of crisis.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Addiction & Mental Health Worker Diploma required
  • Baccalaureate Degree in a health, human or social services discipline an asset
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months)
  • Current Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certificate an asset
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) required
  • Recent (2 to 3 years) mental health experience in a clinical setting required
  • Demonstrated knowledge and specialized training in Mental Health, Crisis Intervention models, Community services, Best Practices in Mental Health required
  • Recent or previous experience working with community resources, agencies and other service providers required
  • Experience with supporting individuals affected by a variety of crises including loss, violence, abuse, crime and traumatic events required
  • Demonstrated experience with managing aggressive behaviour and superior de-escalation techniques required
  • Demonstrated experience with trauma assessment and treatment practices required
  • Experience with suicide assessment and intervention required
  • Advanced Crisis Intervention and Counselling Certificate and/or related certifications an asset
  • Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) certification an asset
  • Understanding of the legal and ethical issues in crisis intervention practice required

Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to advocate and refer patients to appropriate resources required
  • Demonstrated experience on applicable crisis management theories, approaches and strategies required
  • Ability to perform effectively in the crisis field and apply/practice crisis management in a safe and non-threatening environment required
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and support a 24/7 crisis phone line and service required
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as a member of the team
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
  • Good attendance and work record required
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required.
