Mechanical Engineer and Designer

Burlington, Ontario, Canada NAFOR Inc. Full time

"If it lifts, holds, aligns, or assists, we need you to design it."

Design the machines and workstations that build the cars you see on the road every day. As a Mechanical Engineer and Designer at STAK Industries, you will solve real production challenges inside automotive assembly environments, from installing sunroofs and securing wheels to designing strut and muffler assist devices and fully integrated assembly workstations. Using your expertise, you will design assembly lines, custom parts, and mechanical subsystems that move quickly from concept to the factory floor at many of North America's leading automotive manufacturers. Your solutions will improve safety, quality, speed, and cost, with many becoming unique, one-off designs tailored to specific production lines. This is a fast-paced, hands-on role where no two projects are the same. You will work very closely with the Head of Engineering, gain more hands-on experience in one year than five years at an OEM or large manufacturer, and benefit from clear career progression built into the role. STAK is busy and growing due to expanded client opportunities, and offers a fun, friendly, and collaborative office environment. Join our team.

WHAT YOU WOULD DO:

  • Design mechanical workstations, tooling, and sub-assemblies used in automotive vehicle assembly plants, including body, chassis, and final assembly operations
  • Develop automation-adjacent equipment such as robotic end effectors, assist devices, lifters, and material handling solutions that improve ergonomics, safety, and cycle time
  • Translate customer requirements, manufacturing constraints, and conceptual ideas into detailed 3D models and 2D production drawings
  • Create CAD designs from concept through final release, including layout, tolerance considerations, fastener selection, and material specification
  • Support design for manufacturability and assembly, considering fabrication methods, serviceability, durability, and plant-floor conditions
  • Review, check, and revise drawings to ensure accuracy, clarity, and compliance with internal standards and customer requirements
  • Collaborate with engineers, fabricators, integrators, and clients throughout design reviews, build, and commissioning phases
  • Contribute ideas for the continuous improvement of STAK's design standards, drawing practices, and engineering workflows
  • Occasionally support on-site activities such as equipment tryouts, commissioning, or production launches when required

SOME REQUIREMENTS:

  • Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field
  • Mid-level experience in mechanical design, preferably within automotive manufacturing, industrial automation, or custom machinery
  • Strong proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software, including assemblies and detailed drawings
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, and mechanical assembly
  • Familiarity with automotive assembly environments, production line layouts, and industrial safety considerations is a strong asset
  • Ability to interpret design requirements, identify constraints, and solve practical engineering problems
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality, build-ready designs
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced engineering environment

WORK SCHEDULE AND FLEXIBILITY:
This is primarily a Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. role. Flexibility is sometimes required to meet project deadlines. Occasional extended hours may be necessary during peak workloads or critical project phases.

SALARY:
up to $100,000 plus benefits - STAK Industries offers competitive compensation based on experience and expertise. This role emphasizes professional growth, hands-on engineering experience, and the opportunity to do meaningful work in a supportive and engaging environment. When employees and clients are successful, long-term rewards follow naturally.

ABOUT STAK INDUSTRIES:
Founded in 1963, STAK Industries began with a simple goal: to supply better air tools to automotive manufacturers. Three generations later, that focus on quality and performance has evolved into something much broader. STAK has grown from a trusted threaded fastening distributor into a leading assembly engineering and custom equipment partner serving more than 40 automotive plants across Canada and the United States. Built on decades of hands-on experience across all tiers of vehicle manufacturing, the company delivers ergonomic assembly solutions, material handling systems, and custom equipment that help manufacturers improve efficiency, quality, and cost. Through application engineering, equipment commissioning, product launches, project management, and life cycle support, STAK has earned a reputation for technical excellence, reliability, and a commitment to doing whatever it takes to support its customers. The foundation of that success has always been people and partnerships, a commitment that continues to drive the company forward as it helps automotive manufacturers build better vehicles, more efficiently.
