Position Summary

The Shelter Worker provides compassionate, trauma-informed support to individuals accessing AWAC's emergency shelter and drop-in programs. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and respectful environment, ensuring the dignity and well-being of all participants.

The shift duration is 12 hours in length from 7am to 7pm and 7pm to 7am. Shelter Workers are part of a collaborative team that upholds AWAC's mission to walk alongside individuals as they work toward stability, safety, and housing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build respectful, professional relationships with clients through consistent, non-judgmental, and compassionate interactions.

  • Provide assistance with daily needs such as meals, laundry, hygiene supplies, and access to basic services.

  • De-escalate situations and respond to crises calmly and effectively, ensuring safety for all individuals on site.

  • Conduct regular rounds and safety checks throughout the building and surrounding areas to ensure the security of clients, staff, and property.

  • Follow all safety and emergency protocols including incident reporting, fire safety, overdose response, and first aid as required.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment by following established housekeeping and sanitation routines.

  • Ensure supplies are stored properly, and report maintenance or safety issues promptly to the manager or maintenance team.

  • Complete all required documentation, including client intakes, log entries, incident reports, and statistics accurately and in a timely manner.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.

  • Minimum one (1) year of recent related experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use, or other barriers.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage challenging behaviours using trauma-informed and harm-reduction approaches.

  • Strong problem-solving, crisis-intervention, and communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and work effectively within a team environment.

  • Comfortable working shift work, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Valid Food Safe and Standard First Aid (Level 1) required.

  • Clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening required.

  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered

Compensation

This position requires union registration and therefore all benefits and wages are set by the followed collective agreements. Currently the position starts at $23.73.
