Job Title: Legal Accountant
Location: Gasoline Alley, Red Deer Alberta,
Employment Type: 24-32 hours/week (preference given to contractors)
Reports To: Legal Team
About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized controller to join our law firm's administrative and finance team. The ideal candidate has strong technical accounting skills, experience in a legal or professional-services environment, and an understanding of trust/Alberta Law Society rules and regulations. This role supports the firm's financial operations by ensuring accurate billing, timely payments, and adherence to ethical and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting & Reporting
- Prepare and maintain accurate general ledger entries, journal entries, and monthly reconciliations.
- Complete month-end and assist with year-end closing processes.
- Generate financial statements, management reports, and ad-hoc analyses.
Billing & Accounts Receivable
- Monitor bank accounts and receipt funds.
- Handle adjustments, write-offs, and billing corrections.
Accounts Payable & Disbursements
- Process vendor invoices, check requests, and reimbursements.
- Maintain vendor records and verify proper documentation.
- Reconcile credit card statements and expense reports.
Trust / ALIA Accounting
- Manage trust account deposits, payments, and transfers in full compliance with Alberta Law Society.
- Perform monthly three-way trust reconciliations.
- Maintain detailed client trust ledgers and supporting documentation.
Payroll & Benefits Support
- Assist with payroll processing and related journal entries - sage
- Support HR/Finance in administering benefits and deductions.
Compliance & Internal Controls
- Ensure adherence to accounting standards, legal industry rules, and internal policies.
- Support annual audits and coordinate with external accountants or auditors.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial data with discretion.

Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 2-5 years of accounting experience; specifically relating to law office requirements.
- Proficiency with accounting and legal software (Ghost Practice, Esilaw and Sage).
- Experience in payroll and benefits.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft products.
- Strong understanding trust accounting principles.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and organizational abilities.
