The Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP) has been strengthening First Nations education since 1972 in support of the vision of the National Indian Brotherhood's statement on Indian Control of Indian Education. ITEP has offered 31 community-based programs since 1977. We currently have 4 existing community-based programs and another starting in January. ITEP is the largest teacher education program in the territories of Canada whose enrolment is centred on the needs of First Nations teacher candidates. ITEP plays a lead role in the achievement of the University of Saskatchewan's and the College of Education's strategic aims of Indigenous engagement and reconciliation. As an Indigenous teacher education program, ITEP prepares First Nations teachers to rely on the strengths of their cultures, languages, protocols and traditions to create safe and inclusive learning spaces for learners built on respect, relationality, reciprocity, and responsibility.
Summary:
Reporting to the Director of ITEP in the College of Education, this position develops and implements practices, policies and procedures that address and improve cultural, academic and administrative matters in ITEP community-based programs.
This position requires the development and maintenance of collaborative relationships within the College, University, as well as First Nations communities. Working conditions require flexibility and the ability to meet deadlines with accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports and works closely with existing and new ITEP community-based (CB) programs
- Communicates and works closely with community program coordinator/counselor and students to build success from recruitment to graduation including certification, including admissions, enrolment, retention, advancement, appeal, withdrawals, etc
- Provides student support for on-and off campus services including counselling, academic and AES and professional development
- Maintains a spreadsheet of students and classes in each community
- Oversees off-campus course delivery including course requests, timetable and instructor appointments in coordination with Flexible Learning Coordinator
- Coordinates ITEP student events, activities and functions, including recruitment, orientations, mentorship, pinning, and cultural camps
- Provides regular communication with ITEP administrators and CB coordinators, responds to email and phone correspondence. This communication will include travel with a minimum of at least once per term
- Prepares reports, proposals and other submissions as required for band funding, student progress, post-secondary requirements, and student scholarships, bursaries or awards
- Generates and maintains a CB protocol and procedure handbook
- Reassesses, reviews and develops recommendations/strategies for improvement to CB programs including but not limited to recruitment, programming, admissions, website and ITEP general office
- Rectifies student and instructor concerns in a timely manner, consulting with the Directors where appropriate. This will include attendance and academic progress
- Supports the CB advisor by liaising with the College of Education concerning program requirements, student progress, and instructor concerns.
- Coordinates instructor meetings
- Coordinates with the Field Experience office teacher candidate placements for all in school experiences, including student teaching and extended practicum
- Knows and adheres to the requirements of the Bachelor of Education program, including student records, academic profiles, and program requirements
- Teaches off-campus course(s), as opportunities arise
- Ensures registration, admissions, and graduation processes are accurate and done in a timely manner with exemplary service, support, guidance and advisement
- Demonstrates knowledge of funding sources including band funding, student loans and scholarship and bursaries
- Understands local First Nations protocols and socio-economic needs; knowledge of First Nations band policies and procedures in an educational setting
- Ensures program sites are equipped for student success
- Maintains a high degree of personal accountability by ensuring the delivery of services in a warm and welcoming environment, identify and address sensitive and confidential matters with respect, relationality, reciprocity, and responsibility
- Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment
- Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement
- Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A master's degree in education (completed or in progress) is required
- A valid Saskatchewan Teaching Certificate or the ability to obtain one
- Minimum of three years working in First Nation Post-Secondary Education at a University or College setting
- Demonstrated experience in academic advising and personal counselling
- Proven ability to work effectively with diverse individuals in complex environments
- Strong public relations and interpersonal skills including tact, discretion, courtesy, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity
- A thorough understanding of local First Nations communities, cultures, protocols, and perspectives
- Familiarity with First Nations policies and procedures in an educational setting
- Knowledge and sensitivity to First Nations and off campus issues
- Thorough understanding of university environments including related policies, procedures and regulations
- Working knowledge of university systems such as SiRIUS, PAWS, UniFi, as well as Microsoft office applications
- Knowledge of the College of Education courses, policies and degree requirements
- Ability to adapt to and thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment
- Ability to establish and maintain positive partnership and working relationships with diverse teams of people inside and outside the College of Education
- Sound judgment and commitment to privacy and confidentiality.
