Course Description:

CHL 3001H is a required course in the second term of the Master of Health Sciences (MHSc) in Bioethics program. The MHSc in Bioethics is a two-year professional master's degree program. Its students are early and mid-career professionals who work in healthcare, public health or other health-related settings. The MHSc in Bioethics has a hybrid program format with both in-person and online components. CHL3001 is a hybrid course - The in-person component is conducted during a Residency Week in January at the University of Toronto on the St. George Campus. The online component is conducted during five 2.5hr synchronous online seminar sessions scheduled through the Winter Term.

CHL3001 introduces students to the core domains of bioethics practice (clinical ethics, research ethics, organizational ethics, public health ethics, global health ethics, health system and policy ethics). The course employs a case method approach to explore contemporary bioethics issues within and across these domains, to identify and characterize the ethical salient features of these issues, to apply ethics concepts, theories, and approaches to analyze and identify options for action, to explore the contribution of interdisciplinary approaches to resolving bioethics issues, and to develop skills in collaboration, systems thinking, critical reflection, and communication about complex bioethics issues in practice.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Use and critically appraise relevant interdisciplinary literature to describe and analyze ethical issues in clinical care, health research, public health practice, and health policy locally and globally
• Apply ethical concepts, principles, and theories and ethical reasoning to analyze ethical problems and identify potential solutions
• Construct well-reasoned positions and compelling arguments informed by the analysis of empirical and normative scholarship in bioethics
• Work collaboratively and constructively with others to identify, assess and address ethical issues, questions, and problems in professional settings
• Communicate effectively about bioethics issues to a lay audience

Minimum Qualifications: PhD Degree in Bioethics or related disciplinary field. Advanced knowledge of current debates in bioethics, core domains of applied bioethics practice, and bioethics methods of analysis required. Experience with applying practical ethical reasoning in health and health-related settings. Familiarity with the practice of bioethics in clinical care, health research, and/or health policy. Experience teaching bioethics in a university setting required.

Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience teaching registered health professionals preferred. Disciplinary background in the humanities (e.g., philosophy) or social sciences (e.g., anthropology, sociology) an asset.

Description of duties: As well as normal teaching duties, the sessional lecturer plans and delivers learning activities online and in-person; monitors student progress; assesses student assignments; facilitates small and large group discussions; maintains the course Quercus page; attends MHSc faculty meetings; and communicates with the MHSc Program Director as necessary
