Cultural Settlement Worker, Housing Support

It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to broadly provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. TI has over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development, and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services. By incorporating the principles of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ), TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population.
The Cultural Settlement Worker provides housing services to those relocating from the north. The clients range from homeless to being at risk of homelessness or already have housing arrangements but need help adapting to living in Ottawa. The incumbent's main focus will be housing supports while connecting them to culturally related programming that will help with the integration and foster a sense of inclusion within the Ottawa Inuit Community.
Responsibilities
- Advocates for the client in all aspects of culture (physical, mental, spiritual, social)
- Assists with all applications related to housing including identification, income supports, taxes, etc
- Keeps an organized and secure case file in accordance with TI's protocols
- Records case notes in a mandated database
- Provides internal and external referrals to necessary parties
- If requested, accompanies the client to any appointment centered around housing or their well-being
- Maintaining up-to-date professional skills and knowledge through formal and informal training
- Acts as an ambassador for TI within and outside the organization by creating an awareness of TI's programs and services.
- Participate in meetings and committees
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have knowledge of Inuit culture, values, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and traditional practices. Ability to function effectively in a busy environment and in stressful situations and work independently with a strong sense of focus. Task-oriented, Non-judgemental and maintains clear client-service provider boundaries. Familiarity with the socio-economic landscape as it pertains to Inuit, knowledge of the Indigenous and non-Indigenous housing services in Ottawa and outstanding organizational skills.
Minimum college diploma in human services, social work or similar education is preferred or an equivalent combination of education and work experience and minimum 2 years' experience delivering urban housing services to Inuit preferred.
Proficient use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, video-conferencing platforms and electronic records management applications and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check with results acceptable to TI is required. Valid G Class Drivers License is required. On rare occasions the availability to work some evenings and weekends is required. Fluent in English is required and Inuktitut language skills is preferred. First aid / CPR; non-violent crisis intervention training is preferred.

Salary and Benefits
- Salary range is $56,000 to $60,000
