How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:
The Manager, Aquatic Monitoring & Management is responsible for overseeing the aquatic portion of the Regional Watershed Monitoring Program, which collects, stores, and analyzes environmental data within Toronto and Region Conservation Authority's (TRCA's) nine watersheds. With a team of staff, and in collaboration with the Senior Manager, the Manager develops, adapts, and delivers the strategic collection of fish and fish habitat, water quality, groundwater, benthic invertebrates, and geomorphic data within TRCA's watersheds in support of its programs and services.
Major Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with the Senior Manager, leads the strategic direction of the Regional Watershed Monitoring Program (RWMP)
- Critically reviews and assesses the approaches to data collection for the RWMP to ensure the program continues to meet the needs of TRCA and its partners. Adapts the program and approaches as needed to ensure high standards for data utility
- Provides technical expertise and leadership in the implementation of the RWMP and associated watershed monitoring projects
- Supports the Senior Manager in all aspects of data analysis, reporting and management to ensure data are properly collected, maintained, and stored in appropriate data systems and are within program scope
- Provides direction to the evolution of data systems and approaches to ensure efficient and effective data management of RWMP and associated watershed monitoring data
- Develops and maintains reporting products to communicate the types of data collected within the program scope and their importance with partners and stakeholders.
What will you need to succeed:
Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)
- University degree in Environmental Science, Biology, or Environmental Planning/Management or a related field
- Valid Ontario Class G2 driver's license
Experience
- 5+ years of progressive experience managing complex multi-disciplinary environmental monitoring programs.
- 2+ years of progressive managerial, supervisory or project management experience
Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies
- Working knowledge and understanding of watershed ecosystems, urban watershed management strategies, urban sustainability in a retrofit context, behavioural insights, community-based social marketing concepts and science-based approaches to performance monitoring
- Thorough knowledge of various environmental monitoring protocols, including the Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol and Provincial Water Quality Monitoring Network Protocol, with experience applying it in the field
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate program status for various audiences, prepare reports and proposal writing; and analytical skills
