Job Summary:
The Apprentice Millwright at Crop Management Network supports the installation, maintenance, and repair of machinery and mechanical equipment across CMN locations. Working under the supervision of a Journeyman Millwright, the Apprentice conducts routine inspections, assists with preventative maintenance, and learns to troubleshoot equipment to minimize downtime and support the safety and preventative maintenance programs.
Apprentices develop the skills necessary to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings, and assist with alignment, calibration, and repair work. Collaborating closely with the Director of Operations and maintenance team, the Apprentice Millwright helps plan and execute repairs, contribute to facility upgrades, and support the efficient and safe operation of CMN's assets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in developing and optimizing facility preventative maintenance plans & schedules across all CMN sites.
- Work with the Director of Operations and maintenance department on facility expansions, project concepts, and execution of new facility builds or upgrades.
- Use sound judgement under supervision to help troubleshoot and identify mechanical issues and assist in implementing effective repair plans with minimal downtime.
- Conduct regular documented inspections at CMN locations and follow up on outstanding items within set timelines.
- Support prioritization of workload and understand the scope of CMN priorities for repair and maintenance.
- Demonstrate strong time management to ensure maintenance tasks and projects remain on schedule and communicate any variance in timelines.
- Assist with basic welding for general repair and fabrication as permitted.
- Help inspect, maintain, and repair bucket elevators, conveyors, chain drags, pumps, and other facility mechanical components.
- Assist with disassembling and assembling mechanical components within CMN's fertilizer facilities.
- Learn to interpret mechanical drawings, process P&ID's, and plant schematics.
- Learn to troubleshoot process flow issues and assist in reviewing pump curves.
- Develop basic understanding of instrumentation and electrical concepts as related to mechanical systems.
- Collaborate with other trades and the operations team at each CMN location to ensure timelines and scopes of work are clearly communicated.
- Assist with managing mechanical inventory and reporting inventory counts.
- Help maintain the utility trailer, tools, and shop area to ensure they remain organized and in proper working condition.
- Work with preferred vendors to source parts, tools, and supplies.
- Ensure critical spare parts are available, repaired, stocked, and ready for use.
- Participate in identifying opportunities to optimize facilities and support continuous improvement.
- Adhere to Company Health, Safety & Environmental policies; follow PPE requirements and remain current with company-required HSE training.
- Travel regularly to CMN sites with potential limited overnights based on workload and job demand.
- Use basic computer skills to navigate MS Office, CMMS systems, and Work Orders.
Work Environment:
Physical Demands:
The job is physically demanding, often requiring lifting, bending, climbing, and working in confined spaces. Apprentice Millwrights spend significant time on their feet and may need to handle heavy machinery and tools.
Environment:
Work occurs both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to harsh weather conditions. The environment is industrial, with noise, dust, grease, fertilizer products, and other materials commonly present.
Hours:
Full-time position. Occasional night or weekend work may be required during peak operational periods or urgent repairs. Overtime may be necessary.
Travel:
This position requires regular/daily travel to CMN sites (approx. 80%+ of time). Overnight stays may be required depending on project demands.
Office:
Duties include completing safety documentation, entering data into CMMS systems, navigating Outlook and Teams, and assisting with equipment and inventory records. Apprentice is expected to help ensure the shop is kept organized and in good working condition.
Other:
Work at heights and in confined spaces may be required. Must follow all company safety procedures and training requirements.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Registered Alberta Millwright Apprentice (1st–4th year) or willingness to register upon hire.
Experience:
- Mechanical aptitude and interest in industrial maintenance.
- Experience in an industrial, agricultural, or mechanical environment is considered an asset.
Skills & Competencies:
- Proficiency with hand and power tools and willingness to develop welding and fabrication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and willingness to learn P&ID's and schematics.
- Physical ability to lift up to 75 lbs, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks requiring endurance.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to follow instruction and work safely.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends if required.
Licensing:
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence.
Wages:
Apprentice Millwright Pay Band (Aligned with Alberta AIT Requirements)
Apprentices be paid based ona percentage of Journeyman wage:
- 1st Year:60% of Journeyman rate
- 2nd Year:70% of Journeyman rate
- 3rd Year:80% of Journeyman rate
- 4th Year:90% of Journeyman rate
