Overview

Nourish Cowichan society has been feeding students in the Cowichan Valley since 2017. We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Cook to join our culinary team. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 4 years of commercial kitchen experience and a strong understanding of Nourish values of diversity, and respect for all.

As a Cook, you will play a vital role in food preparation and ensuring the highest standards of food safety and quality.

This is a daytime position with weekends off and reduced summer schedule as well as 2 weeks of summer vacation.

For the right candidate we also offer extended health care.

Duties

  • Prepare and cook delicious & nutritional meals appropriate for students from k-12
  • Ensure all food is prepared in accordance with food safety regulations and guidelines. Work in accordance with WorkSafe BC, VIHA as well as fire & health department requirements.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of daily meal preparation.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen area, including proper food handling practices.
  • Collaborate with Executive Chef to ensure timely weekly production.
  • Help monitor inventory levels of kitchen supplies and ingredients, reporting any shortages as needed.
  • Help train new volunteers on food preparation techniques and safety protocols.
  • Participate in menu development by providing input on seasonal ingredients and dish ideas & perform other duties required for production.

Qualifications

  • Previous 4 years of experience in the food industry or restaurant environment is required.
  • Food Safe level 1 & must pass a vulnerable screen criminal record check.
  • Knowledge of food safety standards and proper food handling techniques.
  • Strong skills in meal preparation, cooking methods, and kitchen equipment operation.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and a team-oriented mindset.
  • Demonstrate understanding of working in an environment with a variety of volunteers, students and vendors from diverse cultural & economic backgrounds.
  • A passion for cooking and a desire to learn and grow within the culinary field.
