Apprentice Machinist

Venables Machine Works Ltd. is a trusted and respected leader in the custom steel manufacturing industry; providing design, machining and fabrication since 1931. Venables a dedicated supporter of apprenticeship and is seeking to hire an apprentice machinist for an immediate full-time position. The successful candidate should have pre-employment training with both manual and CNC equipment, preference given to those with existing apprentice status. Must have mechanical aptitude, willingness to learn while working and a positive attitude.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Set up and operate various machine tools for precision part production.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, ensuring dimensions and tolerances are met.
• Calculate and control machining factors like speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth/angle of cut.
• Monitor machine processes, ensuring accuracy and quality during production.
• Verify finished workpiece dimensions using precision measuring instruments.
• Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshoot malfunctions on equipment.
• Maintain inspection records, reporting any deviations from specifications.
• Utilize CNC machines and programming, would be an asset but not a requirement.
• Demonstrate strong mathematical skills, including basic calculations.
• Prior experience as a machinist or similar role required.
• Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles is desirable.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Proven experience in precision machining.
• Proficient in blueprint reading and interpreting technical drawings.
• Knowledge of machining principles and techniques.
• Experience with CNC machines would be an asset but not a requirement.
• Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, especially SolidWorks, is a plus.
• Ability to use precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers).
• Strong mathematical skills.
