Warehouse Worker/Driver (G Licence)

Reports to:

The Warehouse Manager or designate.

Summary:

The Warehouse Worker is responsible for providing warehouse support which encompasses equipment and facility duties. This position assists with the accurate and seamless processing of incoming and outgoing shipments. The Warehouse Worker must load and unload shipments regularly, with the capability of repetitive heavy lifting, and use any necessary equipment, e.g. forklift, electric pallet mover, etc. Other responsibilities include the inspection of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify contents and quality and may be required to assist in the scheduling of appointments. As a representative of Hamilton Food Share, you are expected to interact with our donors, agencies, the public and our suppliers in a positive and respectful manner.

This position is also responsible for the operation of the organization's vehicles including but not limited to the following:

Hino (G licence) and (2) GMC Savana 2500 Van (G licence).

Job Requirements:

• Current and clean abstract from the Ministry of Transportation (must maintain a clean driving record)

Warehouse Responsibilities:

Provide support in all aspects of the facility maintenance and food recovery program.

• Instructing and working with volunteers, as required.
• Inspect product to ensure usable condition with acceptable code dating.
• Maintain a safe work environment.
• Packing and sorting.
• Product breakdown and documentation.
• Building skids. Invoicing responsibilities, as instructed.
• Prepare bays and hydraulic dock for incoming and outgoing product.
• Operation of electrical overhead doors and hydraulic dock plate.
• Secure and accurate loading/unloading of shipments by way of hand bombing to and from various sized vehicles such as cars, vans, and pickup trucks while keeping within the vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVW).
• Secure and accurate loading/unloading of shipments by way of pallet mover or forklift to and from dock level trucks and transports while keeping within the vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVW).
• Weigh product received in the warehouse.
• Assist in the sorting and stacking of food products, following proper practices for perishable food (includes FIFO-First in First Out).
• Operation of a forklift and electric pallet mover and other equipment in a safe manner to ship and receive product.
• Daily warehouse closing procedures to include warehouse lockdown and gate closures to ensure security requirements are maintained.
• Cleaning and maintenance of warehouse, equipment and outside property to include, but not limited to: sweeping, painting, garbage removal and snow removal of immediate dock area and walkways. Hand salting as required during winter months.
• Complete inspection reports during circle checks of warehouse equipment.
• Communicate effectively with the public, clients, and co-workers both verbally and in written form.
• Assist with scheduling appointments, as required.
• Assist in the inputting and reconciliation of data into the warehouse database, as required.

Driver Responsibilities:

• To maintain a clean driver's abstract and to adhere to all road and transportation safety regulations.
• Perform daily vehicle circle checks and submit inspection reports to the Warehouse Manager or designate, noting any items of concern.
• Record and maintain required documentation including driver logbooks.
• Ensure safe loading and off-loading of trucks/vehicles.
• Ensure safe handling and transportation of fresh and frozen foods by utilizing the truck's correct reefer temperature.
• Check all load-related documentation to ensure that it is complete and accurate.
• Perform periodic inspections before, during, and after delivery to ensure that load is properly fastened down and is secure.
• Comply with applicable legislation including safe operation, carriage of goods, occupational health and safety, transportation of dangerous goods, if applicable, and weights and dimensions.
• Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to the vehicles.
• Cleaning and maintenance of the vehicles.
• Ensure that any debris caused by the loading/unloading of truck is cleaned up.
• Provide feedback to supervisor regarding client/vendor problems, mechanical problems, or delivery problems.

Health and Safety

• Follow HFS policies regarding security and safety in order to maintain a safe working environment.
• Maintain organized work area according to policies, procedures and safety regulations.
• Ensure the use of safe lifting methods of all materials.

Other Duties:

• Perform other related duties as necessary.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent preferred.
• Must have and maintain forklift certification or be willing to train.
• G license
• Demonstrated ability to operate material handling equipment, including forklift truck.
• Must possess excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Working experience in Shipping and Receiving role preferred.
• Basic mathematical skills.
• Working knowledge of safe lifting methods.
• Computer literacy, including working skills of Excel and e-mail.
• Exceptional organizational abilities with task prioritization, multi-tasking, use of timelines and time management techniques.
• Attention to detail in all areas of work.
• Strong work ethic and positive team attitude.
• Professional/mature demeanor under stressful situations.

Working Conditions/Environment

• This position requires visual acuity and manual dexterity when operating motor vehicles and warehouse equipment.
• The work can be physically strenuous and demanding requiring the ability to lift/carry (up to 60 pounds), pull/push and manage heavy equipment such as manual pallet movers and objects such as skids.
• Repetitive tasks, heavy lifting, bending, sitting, crouching and kneeling.
• May be exposed to extreme temperatures when working in the industrial cooler and freezer.
• Exposure to various warehouse conditions and temperatures (hot/cold).
• Exposure to a noisy environment and outside weather conditions.
• Is required to work both indoors and outdoors.
• Must be able to perform duties under adverse weather conditions.
• Must be able to address multiple demands simultaneously.
• Must be available to work some irregular hours, infrequently during weekdays, weekends and evenings.
