Job DescriptionCompany Overview
At SkyScouter, we engineer the next generation of hybrid gas-electric UAVs designed for long-endurance missions in inspection, monitoring, defense, and environmental intelligence. Based in British Columbia, we're a leader in autonomous aerial systems, combining AI-driven control, mechanical innovation, and intelligent power management.
Join our mission to redefine the limits of flight endurance, autonomy, and sustainability.
Position: Mechatronics Engineer
Location: British Columbia, Canada
Employment Type: Full-Time
Experience Level: Intermediate to Senior
Role Overview
We are seeking a Mechatronics Engineer to design, integrate, and optimize the mechanical, electrical, and control systems that power SkyScouter's hybrid UAV platforms. You will play a key role in advancing UAV reliability, autonomy, and energy efficiency by developing electromechanical systems, actuation mechanisms, and sensor-driven control logic.
You'll collaborate closely with our AI, flight control, and propulsion teams to bring innovative hardware solutions to life — from conceptual design to flight testing.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechatronic subsystems for UAVs, including actuators, servomechanisms, gimbals, and control surfaces.
- Integrate electrical, mechanical, and control components into robust, lightweight drone assemblies.
- Collaborate on hybrid propulsion and power management systems for high-endurance UAVs.
- Work with sensors (LIDAR, IMU, GPS, cameras) and ensure proper data integration with flight controllers.
- Design and prototype mechanical assemblies using CAD software (SolidWorks or Fusion 360).
- Develop and test control algorithms in MATLAB/Simulink or similar environments.
- Support PCB design and interface development for custom electronics.
- Conduct system-level testing, data analysis, and reliability validation for UAV performance.
- Work cross-functionally with robotics, software, and AI engineers to deliver integrated flight-ready systems.
QualificationsEducation
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience
- 3+ years of experience in mechatronics design, robotics, or aerospace systems development.
- Hands-on experience with embedded systems, motor control, and sensor integration.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar 3D CAD tools.
- Knowledge of C/C++, Python, or MATLAB for control and automation.
- Familiarity with ROS 2, Arduino, PX4, or ArduPilot flight systems.
- Understanding of electronics, PCB design, and actuator control.
- Experience in prototyping, testing, and system troubleshooting.
Desirable Skills
- Background in hybrid propulsion systems or UAV design.
- Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and thermal modeling.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical mindset with attention to detail.
Why Join SkyScouter?
- Be part of a Canadian innovation leader in hybrid UAV technology.
- Work on cutting-edge systems combining mechanics, electronics, and AI.
- Collaborate in a dynamic R&D environment with engineers across multiple disciplines.
- Competitive salary, benefits, and growth opportunities in an expanding company.
