Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Coordinator or designate, the Youth Peer Support Worker works together with the multidisciplinary team to provide peer support services to youth and/or those who have experienced mental health or substance use challenges in a flexible, compassionate and responsible manner. The Youth Peer Support Worker provides a range of non-clinical, peer-based services to youth through shared living/lived experience including assisting in the navigation of the mental health/substance use system while providing individualized peer-based practical, emotional and social supports. Working alongside Clinicians to deliver services, the position facilitates youth peer-based groups, conducts youth peer information sessions and delivers services within the context of a client and family-centered recovery model and in accordance with established vision and values of the Organization.

Travel may be a requirement of this position. If applicable, transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of Vancouver Island Health Authority in accordance with the service assignment and the incumbent must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training And Experience
  • Grade 12; and,
  • Completion of a recognized Peer Support Training Program within 6 months of hire; and,
  • One-year recent related experience in a peer support role or an equivalent combination of education, training and peer support experience.
  • Lived experience with recovery from a mental illness and as a recipient of mental health and substance use services including peer knowledge of the designated service user population in the applicable program area or department; and,
  • Certificates in CPR and First Aid.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize.
  • Ability to observe and recognize changes in the client.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients.
  • Home management skills.
