JOB SUMMARY

Laboratory Services provides laboratory testing services for drinking water, solid wastes, effluents, receiving waters and ground waters.

You perform laboratory routine analyses on various matrices for specified parameters by using approved or accepted methods, and follow standard procedures for approving, verifying and transferring result to the Laboratory Information Management System.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 3 year community college program in chemistry, microbiology or related field
Completion of health and safety training required by legislation and by City of Ottawa

Minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of environmental analytical chemistry/microbiology

Experience on inductively coupled plasma spectrometer; ion chromatograph or segmented flow auto analyser, gas chromatograph and mass spectrometers is desired

KNOWLEDGE
  • Analytical chemistry and microbiology theory and practice related to environmental pollution
  • Automated analytical procedures including inductively coupled plasma spectrometry, segmented flow auto analyzers, ion chromatography and automated titrations
  • Analytical quality control/quality assurance theory and practice
  • Water and wastewater sampling, preservation and storage techniques
  • Water and wastewater treatment fundamentals
  • Laboratory safety code of practice
  • Microcomputer based systems, oracle databases and laboratory information management system
  • Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation and general knowledge of corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to health and safety
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act and ensuing regulations
  • Complete knowledge of what constitutes an adverse condition and the legal responsibilities of the technologist to report
  • Working knowledge of accreditation requirements of ISO 17025 and licensing requirement of the Safe Drinking Water Act
COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Works with a variety of computer software ranging from small Visual Basic applications to Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) through to complex Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for day-to-day operations
  • Perform laboratory tests including gravimetric procedures, titrations, colorimetric tests and electrometric tests
  • Operate a list of equipment, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, ion chromatograph or segmented flow auto analyzer, gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer
  • Report on data, including results, test limitations, method used, quality control flags and possible interferences

  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
