What will you be doing?
As a Behaviour Specialist for our Summer Camp programs, you will travel between camp sites to provide direct support to the Camp Team. You will help navigate challenging participant behaviours, support medical and physical needs of participants, and assist with the successful inclusion of participants with disabilities and diverse backgrounds into the camp setting. This position reports to the Recreation Coordinator
Major Job Responsibilities
What will you be responsible for?
- Working directly with the camp team to model, coach, and educate staff on behaviour management techniques to aid in their understanding and ability to manage behaviours
- Assist with development and delivery of inclusion training for neurotypcial and inclusion staff
- Conducting debriefs with staff when an opportunity presents to educate and coach on strategies used to de-escalate behaviour
- Supporting participants with successful inclusion and providing 1:1 support when required
- Designing and implementing positive behaviour plans and engaging participants with finding appropriate behaviour management techniques, services, and support tools
- Supporting staff in their understanding and execution of "All About Me" profiles
- In collaboration with Inclusion Coordinator advise on scheduling and matching of Inclusion Support Workers to ensure safety and meaningful participation for all inclusion campers
- In collaboration with Camp Directors and Coordinators, reviewing and following up on behaviour tracking forms and implementing the Positive Behaviour Management Policy
- Documentation and administration of medication as outlined in the medication policy
- Responding to parent/guardian concerns and communicating these concerns and incidents to the leadership team and camp staff
- Evaluating situations for potential risks and proactively taking action to address such risks.
- Assisting with personal care including changing, toileting, and feeding as required
- Supporting our extended care periods (7:30-8:30am & 4:30-5:30pm) as required
- Maintaining a high level of professionalism and handling sensitive situations with mature judgement
- Completing All About Me documentation summarizing strategies, and recommendations for future programming with the participants
- Maintaining confidential participant information regarding inclusion needs, health conditions, and financial circumstances to assist with participant support
- Following all established departmental safety standards and practices and Employee Code of Conduct
- Performing all other duties as assigned
Education & Experience
What will we need from you?
- Ability to work a minimum of 8 weeks during July and August, at approximately 40 hours per week, to a maximum of 44 hours. Actual hours vary depending on program registration
- This position typically works full-day shifts, Monday to Friday, with standard hours of either 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Shift times may vary and can include extended care coverage, as outlined above
- Attendance at all mandatory, paid trainings and camp planning time that occur during evenings and weekends throughout May and June is a condition of employment
- Attendance and facilitation at all mandatory, paid bi-weekly staff meetings that occur outside of camp hours
What skills and experience will you bring to the team?
- Completion of a post-secondary diploma or degree in Social Services, Psychology, or a related field including Educational Assistant Diploma, Developmental Services Worker, Autism and Behavioural Science and/or Personal Support Worker Certificate
- Minimum three (3) years of experience working with persons with disabilities and diverse backgrounds
- Minimum one (1) year of experience working in a camp environment preferred
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification is required
- Behaviour Management Systems Training (BMS) or equivalent is required
- HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development is required
- Flexibility, patience, empathy and ability to work closely with participants with complex needs
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of various community support organizations
- Experience working with medically fragile participants
- Able to swim and be comfortable with supporting participants in the pool during camp swim
- Knowledge of basic ASL and augmentative communication aids an asset
- Able to perform all activities including but not limited to lifting a minimum of 50 pounds
- Access to transportation to travel between work locations in a timely manner is required, as successful candidate(s) will be required to travel between different camp sites.
- Under the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to submit a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening upon employment.
