Description of role

A developmental support worker (DSW) supports individuals throughout all stages of life who have a developmental disability.

Core competencies:

  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Able to work well with others and independently
  • Interpersonal skills, including strong written and verbal communication
  • Must be available to work pre-determined scheduled shifts, including evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrates a professional manner with respect to clients and families in the home and in public
  • Must be able to maintain good attendance
  • Collaborate in-person directed planning process
  • Be able to teach daily living skills to adults

Responsibilities:

  • Meal preparation
  • Ensure breakfast, lunch and dinner is prepared and provided
  • Assist clients with meals if they require assistance
  • Administer and record prescribed medication as per instructions from a medical practitioner and follow medication policies and procedures
  • Assist clients with activities of daily living
  • Provide care to clients as outlined in their care plans
  • Assist clients with their individual personal support plans to achieve their identified goals
  • Provide personal support to clients (i.e., activities of daily supported living, bowel/bladder routines, skin care, general hygienic routines
  • Assist clients with bathing and dressing if they require assistance
  • Complete incident reports, daily logs, and any additional logs for clients
  • Monitor and report any change in client's well-being
  • Sign communication book for clients before end of shift
  • Debrief relieving staff of client's behaviour in communication book
  • Transport and assist clients at appointments
  • Support clients at day programs
  • Provide daily supervision
  • Ensure the environment around clients are kept clean and safe
  • Assist with housekeeping duties
  • Fulfil other related duties as assigned by the management team
  • Comply with Policies, Procedures and Protocols

Qualifications:

Diploma, Certificate or a Combination of relevant training: PSW, CPR, Pharmacology, Safe Management, WHMIS (Preferred)

  • Valid G license
  • Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, Google Docs and general computer skills

Experience: 1 Year+ (Preferred)

* College or University Education
