The Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDRT) plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and readiness of surgical and medical equipment throughout King Animal Hospital. This position is responsible for the cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and proper handling of surgical instruments, endoscopes, hospital equipment, and other medical devices. The MDRT ensures all reprocessing activities meet hospital protocols, and infection control requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Instrument & Equipment Reprocessing

  • Disassemble, Clean, disinfect, assemble, package, and sterilize a wide variety of surgical instruments and hospital equipment.
  • Operate and perform basic troubleshooting on sterilization systems, including:
  • ETO sterilizer (use requires successful completion of required testing)
  • Steam sterilizers
  • VPRO low-temperature sterilization system
  • Reprocess flexible and rigid scopes, including endoscopes, bronchoscopes, and cystoscopes, following manufacturer instructions and hospital protocols.
  • Perform quality checks to ensure all instruments and trays meet sterilization standards before distribution.

Environmental Cleaning & Safety

  • Clean and disinfect department surfaces, work areas, and reprocessing equipment.
  • Ensure safe handling and proper disposal of sharps, soiled laundry, and biohazardous waste.
  • Enforce strict compliance with health and safety standards, infection prevention guidelines, and required PPE usage.
  • Clean and maintain laundry equipment, report malfunctions or maintenance needs to lead MDRT
  • Report any defect/damage to surgical instruments to Lead MDRT

Transport & Distribution

  • Transport contaminated surgical instruments from clinical areas to the reprocessing department in accordance with hospital protocols.
  • Deliver clean, sterilized instruments and equipment to appropriate departments when able.
  • Restock supplies and ensure adequate inventory of materials required for cleaning, packaging, and sterilization.
  • Restock supplies and ensure adequate inventory of consumables. (vetwrap, soffban, O2 lines, bubblers)
  • Assist in the distribution and tracking of medical devices and products requiring reprocessing.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Follow all hospital policies, regulatory standards, and manufacturer instructions for medical device reprocessing.
  • Participate in ongoing training, competency assessments, and quality assurance activities.

Qualifications

  • Medical Device Reprocessing certification (preferred) or equivalent training.
  • Experience in MDR, sterile processing, or hospital support services is an asset.
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control practices, and handling of specialized medical devices.
  • Ability to lift, transport, and handle heavy instrument trays and equipment safely. 35lbs
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and adherence to safety standards.

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced clinical setting requiring strict adherence to sterilization timelines.
  • Exposure to biohazards, chemicals, and medical equipment with appropriate PPE provided.
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
