The Clinical Engineering Department provides the general management of medical technology for the Hospital. The department acts as a consultant to nursing directors, clinical leader/managers, nurses, doctors, and paramedical personnel in determining whether a specific technology will help them in the treatment of the end stage renal disease; as well as to Procurement Services and health care professionals in the writing of equipment specifications, tendering documents, technical evaluation, and cost analysis of medical technology. Included in the management of technology is the assurance to Hospital staff that medical equipment meets the required safety and quality standards, and is safe to use on patients and by operators.

The department repairs, maintains and ensures proper functionality of hemodialysis equipment, water treatment systems, and other auxiliary equipment related to dialysis in the Hospital and also provides technical services in the Diabetes Comprehensive Care Program (DCCP) to ensure they are in excellent working order to deliver the prescribed dialysis care. The department also provides in-service to users to ensure proper use of medical equipment and their capabilities. As part of the management of technology, the department manages the Equipment Maintenance and equipment under service contracts.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance on electromedical equipment including dialysis machines and other treatment related equipment used for treating both in-centre and home-care patients to ensure compliance with established industrial standards, CSA standards, and manufacturer's operational specification.
  • Performs safety inspection on all incoming electromedical equipment used in patient care areas (including patient's home) and laboratories.
  • Performs Planned Maintenance (PM) to ensure electromedical equipment is functioning within specifications and is safe to use on patients and for operators.
  • Is actively involved in the care of patients with renal failure and shares a common goal with other Nephrology professionals to provide quality care by working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensures that all methods of operation related to dialysis treatment are safe, effective, and in accordance with the scope of practice.
  • Works in conjunction with the nurse to resolve unexpected technical interruptions within the treatment.
  • Acts as technical resource person for clinical and medical staff
  • Works at different locations (hospitals, satellites and patient's homes)
  • When on Call, reports to work within reasonable time (1 hour)
  • Work schedule includes Saturdays, Sundays, Holidays, morning and evening shifts.
  • Drives long distance to perform services in patient's home
  • Should be physically able to occasionally transport dialysis equipment
  • Should be physically able to move supplies of up to 50lbs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have an undergraduate education in biomedical or electronic engineering technologist or equivalent
  • Evidence of formal training in hemodialysis and water treatment system an asset
  • Minimum 2 years recent experience in hemodialysis and water treatment system troubleshooting, repair and maintenance experience.
  • Ability to obtain and evaluate different types of information to ensure comprehensive daily operation and optimized future developments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent computer literacy
  • Must have a valid Ontario driver's license and good driving record.
