About the Organization

Victim Services of Durham Region (VSDR) is a non-profit charitable organization that works in partnership with community agencies to support victims of crime and tragic circumstances. We aim to prevent violence through awareness, education, and compassionate response.

We provide on-site and telephone crisis intervention, accepting community, self, and police referrals. We are seeking a
full-time Crisis Intervention Counsellor
to deliver trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive services within our
Human Trafficking Program
.

The successful candidate will provide support that respects diverse worldviews and acknowledges the intersectionality of each survivor's experience. They will bring an equity lens rooted in anti-racism, anti-oppression, and gender-inclusive practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide phone and/or in-person support including but not limited to case management, client intake, needs assessment, safety planning, emotional support, practical assistance, and community referrals
  • Offer short-term emotional support through active listening, validation, and by promoting survivor autonomy and choice
  • Liaise with community agencies to ensure seamless connection to longer-term support services
  • Complete eligibility assessments and applications on behalf of survivors (e.g., the Victim Quick Response Program)
  • Manage daily workflow of assigned cases
  • Maintain accurate documentation and ensure agency and survivor confidentiality
  • Participate in on-call support coverage

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Social Service Worker diploma, BSW, or related program and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong understanding and demonstrated experience in trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, anti-racist, decolonial, and equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging practices
  • Deep commitment to social justice and cultural safety
  • Proven ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment, flexibility, and strong problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care with experience providing telephone support and crisis intervention
  • Strong knowledge of community and government services, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse partner agencies and police services
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and deadlines effectively
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask while maintaining a high level of accuracy
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Ability to work evenings and travel throughout the region; valid Ontario driver's license, insurance, and reliable vehicle required
  • Must reside in Durham Region to meet on-call response requirements
  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to an acceptable Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
  • The successful candidate will typically work Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend coverage. Flexible hours (evenings, weekends, holidays) may be required on an infrequent basis. On-call support (days, evenings, weekends, holidays) is required on a rotational basis
