Overview of role:

WestJet Group is seeking a Senior Data Developer team member for the progressive, essential, and fun Data Engineering team.

A strong passion for data, demonstrate high accountability, and set high standards with a focus on meeting requestors and our standards/requirements. You will work with a team that directly builds and delivers solutions to business objectives and outcomes, using cloud-based services, producing action-oriented insights.

Key deliverables / responsibilities include:

  • Plan and lead development in alignment with the Data Delivery strategy
  • Advise on the right way to apply data development standards and methods, ensuring compliance, and maintain technical responsibility for all the stages and iterations of a data development project

  • Provide 'programming tools and techniques' technical and end-user advice - for existing and new tools - to stakeholders and set the team-based standards

  • Proactively mentor team members to promote a communal learning and knowledge sharing culture; provide technical leadership, coach, and mentor the team

  • Produce detailed designs and document work using required standards, methods, and tools, including prototyping tools where appropriate
  • Find ways to improve code/scripts and system robustness, resilience, and stability
  • Translate logical designs into physical designs
  • Leads review of own work and that of colleagues' ensure that assigned daily support activities are dealt with in a successful and timely manner
  • Design, implement and test cloud computing solutions using Snowflake
  • Create, monitor, and optimize ETL/ELT processes and migrate on-premises solutions to Snowflake
  • Validate that the Data Engineering meets requirements and Service-Level expectations
  • Leads workshops, presentations, and training that provide skill and knowledge development for the team.
  • Work with operational partners to ensure the supportability of new features/products and to provide timely technical support and fixes to production applications
  • Regularly makes decisions under minimal guidance that have a significant impact on the organization's financial and business operations
  • For assigned customer requests: Communicate with requestors effectively, frequently and responsively to their concerns, issues, feedback, and questions. Advise on the best solution to meet the requestor's objectives.

Experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience working in very large data warehouse environments
  • 3+ years of demonstrated data developer experience in SQL development
  • 3+ years of Data Warehouse experience in a project environment
  • Nice to have Azure Data Engineering or Snowflake certification
  • Experience and proficiency with Data dimensional modeling, data analysis and data mining
  • Experience with real-time and batch data processing
  • Expert in writing SQL Scripts using window functions and Query optimization
  • Experience with Custom File Formats, setting up Ingestion Monitoring
  • Experience with ETL, ELT and data warehouse automation tools
  • Experience with cloud-based computing services and data warehouses like Snowflake, Azure, or similar
  • Experience delivering custom solutions using the Scrum delivery methodology
  • Strong data related analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong ability to develop meaningful, repeatable, and consistent quality checks throughout the development process

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non- technical stakeholders

  • A work ethic based on a strong desire to exceed expectations

  • Proven ability to meet tight deadlines, multi-task, and prioritize workload
  • Experience conducting large scale data analysis to support business decision making
  • Experience in designing and delivering cross functional data solutions
  • Experience with WhereScape and Snowflake
  • Experience with Databricks or other cloud data processing technologies
  • Experience with DevOps automated build and deployment process
  • Experience with languages such as PySpark, Python, Bash, PowerShell
  • Experience with JIRA or Azure DevOps
