We service southwestern Ontario with work primarily completed in Guelph, Kitchener and Cambridge and surrounding areas. We operate in three key areas: Sheet Metal Roofing and Siding, Commercial HVAC, and Custom Welding. Projects range from residential/commercial construction, industrial maintenance, to industrial engineered build and spec projects. We specialize in the misc. metals such as access ladders, mezzanines, canopies, walk overs, ships ladders, custom railings, Mobile welding, and custom repair and maintenance.

O'Brien Fabrications Ltd. is seeking an experienced, dedicated, and Proficient employee to join our Custom Welding Department. Candidates should have experience and be knowledgeable in commercial, and industrial welding & metal fabrication/installations.

We are seeking an experienced Steel Estimator / Coordinator to join our growing fabrication team. This role offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment that handles a wide range of projects — from custom fabrication and architectural metalwork to structural steel assemblies.

As part of our fabrication division, you will play a key role in supporting project success from initial estimating through coordination and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret drawings, specifications, and bid documents for custom metal fabrication, miscellaneous metals, and structural steel projects.
  • Prepare detailed material and labor take-offs and develop accurate cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with project managers, designers, and shop supervisors to ensure clear understanding of scope and execution plans.
  • Communicate with suppliers and subcontractors for pricing and technical details.
  • Track awarded projects, assist in project scheduling, and coordinate fabrication timelines.
  • Maintain estimating records, update pricing databases, and support continuous improvement in estimating and coordination processes.
  • Might be required to visit sites and perform sketches and take measurements to perform a quotation, or assist by verifying field dimensions as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5–10 years of experience in estimating or coordinating within the steel fabrication or construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of steel fabrication methods, materials, and shop drawings.
  • Proficiency in reading fabrication and structural drawings (AutoCAD knowledge is an asset).
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with take-off and estimating software an asset.
