Interim Vice President Clinical Services & CNE

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Duration: 6 months

Location: Greater Toronto Area

Our client, a high-profile acute hospital are navigating a leadership transition and require an experienced clinical executive to provide stability and strategic direction to a broad portfolio. The Interim VP Clinical Services & CNE will lead a large, diverse clinical team, ensure continuity of care whilst driving improvements in MH&A programs. This is a "fly the plane while remodeling it" assignment—balancing day-to-day operations with transformational objectives.

Scope of Responsibility

  • Oversight of all clinical programs including Mental Health, Medicine, Surgery, Emergency, Critical Care, Rehabilitation, Professional Practice, and Nursing Education.
  • Budget accountability for clinical services; ensure financial stewardship and operational efficiency.
  • Leadership of quality, patient safety, infection prevention, and ethics portfolios.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Mental Health & Addictions Review.
  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of inpatient, outpatient, and community MH&A programs.
  • Identify gaps in access, flow, quality, and integration with community partners.
  • Develop and implement a prioritized improvement plan within 90 days.

Clinical Leadership & Safety:

  • Maintain high standards of patient safety and quality across all clinical programs.
  • Ensure compliance with Accreditation Canada standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Strengthen risk management and incident response processes.

People & Culture:

  • Coach and inspire the clinical leadership team through the transition.
  • Engage nursing and allied health teams through visible leadership and transparent communication.
  • Address workforce challenges (retention, scheduling, psychological safety).
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and accountability.

System Partnerships:

  • Build strong relationships with Ontario Health, local Ontario Health Teams, and community MH&A agencies.
  • Establish joint improvement initiatives to enhance transitions of care.

Transition Planning:

  • Prepare a detailed handover package for the incoming permanent VP/CNE, including strategic priorities, risk register, and active improvement charters.

4. Deliverables & Milestones

First 30 Days:

  • Situational analysis of MH&A programs and clinical operations.
  • Safety stabilization plan and leadership huddles implemented
    .

By Day 60:

  • MH&A diagnostic report with baseline metrics and improvement priorities.
  • Accreditation readiness gap analysis and action plan.

By Day 90:

  • Launch 3–5 MH&A improvement initiatives (e.g., ED flow, crisis alternatives, discharge planning).
  • Board dashboard developed for clinical performance and safety indicators.

By Month 6:

  • Demonstrable improvements in MH&A access and quality metrics.
  • Comprehensive transition plan for permanent VP/CNE.

Profile Experience:

  • Senior hospital executive (VP/CNE) with proven leadership in MH&A and complex clinical portfolios.
  • Track record of improving patient flow, safety, and quality in mental health programs.
  • Strategic thinker with operational acumen; strong financial and HR management skills.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Positive trends in safety indicators and patient experience scores.
  • Enhanced staff engagement and retention in nursing and MH&A teams.
  • Strengthened partnerships with community agencies and system stakeholders.

Education:

  • Graduate degree in Nursing, Health Administration, or related field; CHE designation preferred.
  • RN, in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
