This Senior Web and Mobile Architect role is an unique opportunity to support Cloud architecture efforts at Manulife / John Hancock, driving innovation and scalability through Microsoft Azure.
As part of our mission you'll play a key role in translating business vision into modern, cloud-native solutions. This role offers the chance to stay hands-on with cutting-edge Azure technologies, influence enterprise-wide architecture decisions, and contribute to a collaborative, forward-thinking engineering culture.
Office location: Toronto - Canada (ideally) or Waterloo - Canada or Boston - USA
Work arrangement: Hybrid - 3 days in office, 2 days from Home; Remote working option is not available.
Position Responsibilities:
Architect and deliver end-to-end Azure cloud solutions across multiple business domains.
Produce technical design artifacts aligned with Well-Architected Framework.
Design and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performing web and mobile architecture blueprints aligned with business and technical requirements.
Define and document reference architectures, integration patterns, and technology stacks for mobile and web platforms, including Firebase services.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure architectural consistency across digital channels.
Lead architecture reviews and provide guidance on best practices for mobile and web development.
Collaborate with delivery teams to ensure scalable, secure, and cost-effective implementations.
Develop reusable components and patterns using Azure Functions, Logic Apps, and Event Grid.
Lead proof-of-concepts
Present solution options with trade-offs using diagrams and whiteboarding tools.
Evaluate third-party solutions for integration with Azure services.
Partner with engineering leads and developers for the related business functions to own and drive end-to-end delivery of technical solutions to the business.
Produce key design documents and incremental technical solution architecture artifacts based on project needs and our architectural target state.
Actively participate in all aspects of project life cycle, working closely with solution delivery teams and committed to business success.
Develop and enhance software frameworks, design patterns, and best practices.
Design and implement new technology proof-of-concepts.
Ability to whiteboard, present and discuss different solution options with pros & cons.
Collaborate and incorporate feedback from various stakeholders to drive design decisions.
Review artifacts like use cases, estimates, high level designs, low level designs, code, and provide appropriate feedback.
Review packaged solutions for technical fit and feasibility for integration.
Guide development teams and drive solutions through various review processes by leading and contributing to artifacts such as design diagrams, decision trees, pattern articulation, etc. at respective review boards (segment and global).
Identify complex issues in a timely manner and provide mitigation recommendations to the Project and Product leads.
Demonstrated leadership abilities in a complex environment in driving operational excellence and best practices.
Contribute to architecture and engineering communities across the company.
Hands-on experience with Azure PaaS, serverless, and containerized workloads (AKS, Container Apps).
Proficiency in C# or Java, Python, JavaScript within Azure Functions or App Services.
Familiarity with modern front-end frameworks (React, Angular) and .NET Core APIs.
Knowledge of data privacy and compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
Financial services industry experience preferred.
Required Qualifications:
7+ year in IT experience
3+ years experience in architecting mobile native systems and web applications using modern frameworks such as React, Angular, Flutter, Swift, or Kotlin.
Hands-on experience with Firebase services including Firestore, Firebase Authentication, analytics and Firebase Test Lab.
Strong understanding of cloud-native architecture, microservices, and API design.
Ability to create and maintain architecture blueprints and roadmaps.
Documentation of architecture decisions and rationale.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience from large complex environment such as Financial or banking industry is highly preferred but not a must.
