Role ResponsibilitiesThe Ministry of Education and Childcare has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as Braille Translator/Editor within SSVI – Services for Students with Visual Impairments
Reporting to the Manager, SSVI, the Translator / Editor position is responsible for providing professional translation, transcription, proof-reading, and editing services for a variety of documents including: provincial diploma exams, provincial achievement tests, literacy and numeracy screeners, learning and teaching resources, and other materials/resources, into Unified English Braille (UEB) code. This position will work collaboratively with peers in Learner Supports, Education Supports, and the PSS division, as well as with colleagues from System Excellence, including assessment, as well as Curriculum and Careers, to ensure alignment with Branch, Sector, Division, and Ministry requirements and policies, while maintaining the security of the provincial exams, and accessibility for students.
The key responsibilities will be as below:
Braille translation, transcription, and proofreading:
- Translate and transcribe English documents and resources to braille utilizing appropriate software and knowledge of Unified English Braille (UEB).
- Prepare source files for use in Word to then be translated into braille.
- Format the resource according to Braille Code books and Guidelines, as well as to GoA and Education and Childcare standards.
- Proofread and edit (which involves translation of the English text into braille and vice versa) braille files/documents created by other team members, as well as by independent contractors, compared to the original source, to ensure UEB rules and Format Guidelines are followed, and edit as required, in collaboration with the proofreader.
Tactile diagram production:
- Possess, and upgrade as needed, the special training required to produce tactile graphics according to Guidelines.
- Utilize creative skills and understanding of braille readers requirements when translating and creating tactile diagrams.
Duplication of titles:
- Collate and bind volumes.
- Send files electronically to other production houses and to stakeholders as required, maintaining security of Education and Childcare documents.
Project management:
- Balance importance, urgency, and time requirements of multiple projects.
- Prioritize and organize projects to meet both individual and team deadlines as assigned.
- Time and project management to meet deadlines for legislative requirements.
Content for Communications:
- Work with manager, SSVI, and senior leadership, to provide input to develop responses to action requests, briefing requests, and correspondence received from the Minister, Deputy Minister, and Chief Operating Officer/Assistant Deputy Minister for responses to stakeholder communications, as well as action requests.
- Work with manager, SSVI, and senior leadership, as subject matter experts, regarding content for responses to stakeholders, as well as input for policies regarding the needs of braille-reading students and the educational staff who work with them.

Minimum Recruitment Standards
Bachelor's degree in a related field and 2 years progressively responsible experience required; or equivalent as described below:
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
Certification and Experiences:
- Certification in UEB, Literary Braille Transcription (including manuscript), Proofreading, and/or Mathematics Transcription from CNIB
OR:
- Completion of braille lessons (From Print to Braille with UEB, or Mastering Literary Braille from CNIB, or other accredited course), plus 2 years of related experience; and
- A letter of Proficiency for UEB Technical.

- Braille translation/transcription software.
- Software for the use of scanning and graphics.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate and utilize problem-solving skills.

NotesThis is a temporary full-time position up to 15 months working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
