JOB DESCRIPTIONThe Department of Chemical Engineering comprises 28 professors and conducts innovative research, in close collaboration with industry, in the following fields: lifecycle analyses, biorefinery, biomanufacturing, reactor and process engineering, materials and biomaterials, regenerative medicine, process modeling and control, and polymers. This position aligns with the Department of Chemical Engineering's desire to increase the group of professors contributing to research activities that leverage data science in support of sustainable development, with a focus on unit operations as they apply to this field.
The department is seeking to recruit a faculty member whose expertise will strengthen its efforts to leverage data science for sustainable development. We aim for research that will better link process development to its long-term environmental and societal impacts, taking into account the full complexity of the evolution of the techno-economic systems with which these processes will interact.
We welcome any application that supports this central mission, particularly through cross-disciplinary research with strong potential for departmental collaborations in one or more of the following themes:
- Future-oriented impact models, i.e., prospective, scaled-up life-cycle assessments (LCA) with an assessment of long-term technological benefits for society.
- Innovative approaches to the acquisition, extraction, and integration of heterogeneous data in environmental sustainability analysis and decision-making.
- Operations research applied to the environmental optimization of processes and production/consumption systems.
- Prospective assessment of the roles, opportunities, and threats of different processes/technologies —both new and established— in the upcoming transitions (to carbon neutrality, to circular economy, etc.).
- Advanced modeling approaches for LCA, including improved uncertainty assessment based on Big Data and Bayesian statistics.
- Eco-design of products and processes through the integration of LCA with generative or hybrid machine learning–based models.
- Opportunities and challenges of circular economy strategies, and more generally, the efficient use of energy, materials, and waste to meet societal demands.
- Industrial symbiosis (analysis and management), transition toward more efficient industrial production, process integration, and circular economy supported by LCA
The successful candidate will carry out the responsibilities of this position with dynamism and creativity. Among other duties, they will:
- Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels;
- Supervise undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students;
- Carry out innovative research projects;

- Publish the scientific results of this research;
- Participate in the department's teaching and research activities;
- Collaborate with other research teams at Polytechnique Montréal or other institutions;
Contribute to enhancing Polytechnique Montréal's visibility and influence in Québec and internationally.
PROFIL AND JOB REQUIREMENTSThe candidate will meet the following requirements:

- Have a proven track record of developing and conducting an independent research program that will enable them to obtain funding to supervise graduate students;
- Demonstrate excellent teaching skills, if possible supported by teaching evaluations;

- Have a sufficient command of oral and written French before submitting their tenure file, since French is the language of instruction at Polytechnique Montréal.
Polytechnique Montréal will provide the candidate with the necessary assistance and support to register with the OIQ and to learn French.
Applicants with a bachelor's degree in engineering or with industry experience are encouraged to include this in their application.
