Thornfield Consulting is a young and rapidly growing structural engineering consulting firm located in Chilliwack, BC. We work on projects throughout western Canada, with a focus on cold-formed steel and structural steel.

We take pride in our hands-on, collaborative approach. Our engineers work closely with architects, contractors, and owners to keep projects buildable and efficient. From schools to hospitals and transit infrastructure and beyond, Thornfield designs structural systems that balance strength, coordination, and simplicity.

Our portfolio includes cold-formed steel framing, structural steel design, masonry veneer support systems, and custom elements like pipe racks, signage supports, and mechanical platforms in addition to some wood design.

Role Description

This is a part-time remote role for a Structural Designer/Engineer. You'll assist in the design and preparation of structural drawings and calculations, working closely with our engineers and technologists. The position is ideal for someone who already holds a full-time engineering job but wants to take on selective design work on a contract basis.

You'll be involved in:

  • Designing cold-formed steel and structural steel systems
  • Producing and revising design drawings, details, and calculations
  • Reviewing shop drawings and fabrication details for accuracy and constructability
  • Coordinating with engineers and contractors on practical field solutions
  • Supporting smaller structural components such as pipe supports, canopies, and platforms

This is a remote position that requires digital coordination, clear communication, and the ability to manage independent project tasks.

Qualifications

  • Licensed P.Eng. (preferred) or EIT actively pursuing licensure
  • Experience in steel stud and/or structural steel design
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and written English
  • Ability to work efficiently with digital files and coordinate remotely
  • Experience using RFEM 6 is a major asset
  • Experience using CFS by RSG is also a major asset
  • Experience with steel detailing and interpreting fabrication drawings is an advantage
  • Preference will be given to candidates based in Canada, particularly in British Columbia and the Montreal area
  • Additional preference will be given to candidates who already have a full-time engineering position and are permitted by their employer to perform part-time consulting work independently
