THE ROLE
Reporting to the Head of Legal Affaires Canada and Global Compliance and Litigation, the Director of Compliance and Data Privacy will be responsible to oversee the continued development and management of the ethics, compliance, internal investigations, and data privacy programs. This strategic role also includes the ongoing strengthening of compliance programs, particularly in areas such as anti-money laundering and adherence to international sanctions.
In addition to providing expert legal counsel, the Director, Global Compliance and Data Privacy will assume a key leadership role by overseeing and guiding the compliance team. This includes ensuring the team is equipped with the necessary resources, support, and strategic direction to deliver high-quality legal services, fostering professional growth, and promoting a collaborative and accountable work environment. The Director will be responsible for setting clear priorities, mentoring team members, and driving continuous improvement within the team to meet organizational objectives.
What You'll Do
Here are some ways you can make a difference:
- Lead, in collaboration with various teams of professionals across the company, the ongoing development of the company's global compliance strategy;
- Ensure the continuous development and implementation of the compliance framework (ethics, conflicts of interest, anti-money laundering, sanctions, competition law) as well as data privacy;
- Assist in the assessment and management of compliance risks;
- Ensure governance and collaborate with operational legal teams on their compliance projects related to competition law and retail law, especially regarding highly regulated products such as tobacco, alcohol, lotteries, and gaming;
- Prepare and provide legal opinions primarily in the areas of compliance and data privacy;
- Monitor legal developments on compliance and privacy protection topics across all markets in which we operate and advise business units on ongoing legislative changes in their sector;
- Guide the work of business units to identify objectives and strategies for managing risks related to money laundering, sanctions, competition law, ethics, and compliance;
- Manage the internal investigation program for whistleblower reports and work with Human Resources to ensure appropriate follow-up on sanctions;
- Conduct internal investigations into potential violations of company policies and laws;
- Occasionally interact with external lawyers, consultants, professionals, and vendors on mandates related to the company's compliance framework;
- Monitor and assess non-compliance risks and propose corrective measures.
- Lead, mentor, and support the compliance team.
- Ensure the team is aligned with organizational goals and legal priorities, providing ongoing guidance, coaching, and professional development.
- Oversee workload distribution, set clear expectations, and foster a collaborative environment where team members are empowered to deliver high-quality legal counsel and support.
- Regularly assess team performance, identify areas for growth, and implement best practices to optimize efficiency and effectiveness.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for escalated issues, ensuring the team has the resources and direction needed to address complex labor and employment matters.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and legal excellence within the team.
What You'll Need

Education:
- Bachelor's degree in law
- Be a member in good standing of a Canadian or American bar association (preferably Quebec, Ontario, New York, or North Carolina)
Experience:
- Have at least ten (10) years of relevant experience in compliance, internal investigations, or privacy protection, within a company or a law firm.
Knowledge and skills:
- Strong legal and management skills
- Proven ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision, and to manage multiple concurrent files while meeting established deadlines
- Analytical and synthesis skills, with the ability to simplify legal concepts
- Strong organizational and priority management skills
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Capacity to adapt to a constantly changing environment
Language skills:
- Bilingualism required (Advanced French and English) both spoken and written, as the person will be required to work and communicate regularly in English while performing the tasks outlined above. Specifically, the role requires collaboration with global teams.
