Job description
The primary focus of the Junior Estimator/Project Assistant is to assist the Senior Estimator/Project Manager in preparing estimates for civil infrastructure projects and to aid with project management. The position's requirements may change based on the needs of our customers.
Tasks & Responsibilities
- Review existing conditions and pre-plan construction works, including a review of existing environmental features, and develop a plan to eliminate any adverse environmental effects.
- Complete a detailed review of civil engineering plan sets, geotechnical reports, erosion and sediment control plans, tender documents, specifications, and contract documents.
- Utilize computer software to complete a detailed project takeoff including but not limited to the following components: existing elevations, proposed elevations, pavement areas and road structures, curb and gutter, sidewalk and driveways, storm and sanitary sewers, watermains, esc works, retaining walls, BC Hydro, Telus, Shaw, and Fortis GasWorks.
- Utilize computer software to prepare complete and detailed estimates for civil projects. The estimate will include accurate quantities and calculation notes.
- Correspond with Subcontractors and Materials Suppliers for project quotations.
- Become proficient with standard building materials for civil works, including sewer and water materials and fittings, precast concrete, granular materials, environmental protection devices, and paving/concrete works.
- Research and become familiar with municipal specifications and the Master Municipal Construction Document (MMCD).
- Attend technical seminars or training events relevant to the position.
- Design Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) that are in accordance with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Design Manual for offsite utility and road work.
Requirements
- Drivers license.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with a team.
- Proficient with the use of computers.
- Ability to manage time and execute deadlines.
- Interest in construction, project management, and finding solutions.
- Completion of an engineering degree, technology diploma, or certificate would benefit a potential applicant, but is not necessary.
- Detail-oriented with strong math skills.
- Self-starter that enjoys challenges and working under pressure.
