Responsibilities
Tasks
- Collaborate with members of an interdisciplinary health team
- Collect blood, tissue or other samples from patients
- Coordinate patient care
- Document observations on organs
- Evaluate patient care and progress
- Evaluate the effectiveness of counselling and the patient's outcomes
- Examine the results of the tests
- Implement an interdisciplinary plan of care
- Interpret medical test results
- Interview clients, prepare case histories and assess problems
- Monitor patients and advise physician of any changes in patients' condition
- Order medical diagnostic or clinical tests
- Perform diagnostic tests
- Perform specialized eye tests to measure and assess defective binocular vision or abnormal eye movement in patients
- Photograph organs and specimens to record findings
- Plan patient care
- Provide end-of-life counselling and bereavement support to patients and their families
- Publish research papers, educational texts and articles
- Supervise junior resident pathologists and morgue attendants
- Supervise other counsellors, social service staff and assistants
- Train resident pathologists and morgue attendants
- Treat patients through the use of natural healing methods
- Work alongside ophthalmologists in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders
- Diagnose disorders and injuries of the musculo-skeletal, circulatory and nervous systems
- Log patient samples and prepare them for testing
- Prescribe treatment such as eye exercises or patching regimens
- Treat patients with manipulative therapy, medications or surgery
- Advise patients on drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs
- Diagnose patients' diseases and disorders
- Employ natural methods of healing such as acupuncture and acupressure, spinal manipulation, reflexology and hydrotherapy
- Employ other methods of healing such as herbal medicines, biochemical therapy, clinical nutrition, homeopathy and counselling in their treatment
- Ensure infection control
- Perform surgery on the bones of the forefoot and the subcutaneous soft tissues of the foot
- Set up medical laboratory equipment
- Support and facilitate the grieving process for the patient and their family
- Treat patients using braces, casts, shields, orthotic devices, physical therapy, or prescribed medications
- Care for, assess and monitor the health of newborns and refer infants to appropriate medical services as required
- Conduct routine laboratory tests and sample analyses
- Develop and implement counselling and intervention programs to assist clients in determining goals and means of attaining them
- Diagnose diseases, deformities and injuries of the human foot
- Manage labour and spontaneous normal deliveries
- Provide advice and guidance regarding care for newborns and young infants
- Provide primary, full-course, care to women and their babies during pregnancy, labour, birth and the post-natal period including monitoring the health of mother and baby
- Treat patients using braces, casts, shields, orthotic devices, physical therapy and subcutaneous soft-tissue foot surgery
- Advise patients on health care
- Clean and maintain medical laboratory and laboratory equipment
- Counsel clients, provide therapy and mediation services, and facilitate group sessions
- Examine patients and take their medical histories and consult with physicians and other medical practitioners to evaluate patients' physical and mental health
- Order laboratory tests, X-rays and other diagnostic procedures
- Participate in fundraising activities
- Conduct patient interviews, physical assessments and take medical histories
- Conduct quality control assessment of testing techniques
- Inoculate and vaccinate patients to prevent and treat diseases
- Perform and assist in routine surgery
- Provide health maintenance education
- Recruit and hire staff
- Follow up results of counselling programs and clients' adjustment
- Arrange for radiographic examinations of patients for autopsy
- Assist with or perform autopsies and surgical specimen examinations under pathologists' supervision
- Clean and maintain autopsy, surgical and other equipment
- Collect tissue specimens for chemical analysis and record findings
- Discard specimens according to established safety procedures
- Dissect, examine, weigh organs
- Prepare bodies for release to funeral homes
- Prepare for autopsies by obtaining patients' medical records
- Deliver presentations at conferences, workshops or symposia
- Conduct vocational testing and psychometric assessment
- Prepare assessment, progress, follow-up and court reports
- Identify additional/alternative services and provide referrals
- Liaise with community agencies or partners, and identify additional or alternative services and provide referrals
- Provide expert witness testimony in court proceedings
- Conduct research and interviews for the purpose of publishing results
- Provide public education and consultation to other professionals or groups regarding counselling services, issues and methods
