Position Title: Education Assistant

Reports to: HCS Principal

Job Overview

Reporting to the Haisla Community School (HCS) Principal, the Education Assistant works under the direction of the classroom teacher and works with a wide variety of students including those with complex needs requiring support. The Education Assistant assists teachers with the delivery of programs and services to support academic development and socialization of students and to ensure the safety and comfort of students with behavior challenges or complex needs in and out of the classroom. Supports may include academic assistance, life and social skills development, personal care, physical assistance and positive behavior support. The Education Assistant also provides support to classroom teachers with overall classroom management, lesson support as well as daily supervision on the playground.

Duties & Responsibilities

Classroom & Student Support:

  • Under direction of the classroom teacher, provide educational assistance in learning activities for students.
  • Share information with student support team to assist with of Individual Education Plan (IEP) design, learning activities and transition plans.
  • Assist teachers and students in the delivery of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), particularly those that include specialized medical, learning or mental health interventions.
  • Assist classroom teachers with preparation of classroom materials and support the adaptation of classroom materials to meet student needs.
  • Assist in the planning, acquisition and reinforcement of life and social skills to help foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes safety, learning and respect.
  • Work one-to-one and with small groups with students to provide support.
  • Provide personal care assistance and physical assistance to students where necessary.
  • Implement relevant components of educational support programs, such as speech therapy, physical and/or occupational therapy and assists students using specialized equipment such as speech computer programs, personal communicators and wheelchairs (with training support).
  • Assist with school supervision before and after school and during recess and lunch.

Administrative Duties:

  • Record student progress and observation notes to share with classroom teachers and relevant stakeholders.
  • Document, monitor and report to classroom teacher on program and strategy implementations.
  • Communicate as requested with parents and guardians regarding student progress and individual student needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure the privacy and security of records.
  • Perform other tasks within scope of position as required.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Highschool Diploma, or equivalent.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Ability to problem-solve and use critical-thinking skills to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
  • Ability to respond to a dynamic environment with flexibility, sensitivity, compassionate and empathy.
  • Classroom management skills to support an organized, productive, inclusive and safe learning environment.
  • Knowledge of First Nations Culture and working in a First Nation's community is an asset.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).
