Overview

The Behaviour Support Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting children with behavioural challenges and developmental disabilities. This position involves working closely with children, families, and the circle of care to implement effective behavioural strategies and interventions. The Behaviour Support Specialist is responsible for fostering a positive environment that promotes social, emotional, and wellness growth.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and evaluate children's behavioural needs through observation and data collection.
  • Develop and implement individualized behaviour intervention plans tailored to each child's specific requirements.
  • Collaborate with the circle of care to ensure consistent application of behavioural strategies across various settings.
  • Support the client in home or in the community to participate in pro-social experiences.
  • Provide direct support to children during therapeutic sessions, focusing on skill development and emotional regulation.
  • Monitor progress and adjust intervention strategies as necessary based on ongoing assessments.
  • Maintain accurate records of behaviours, interventions, and outcomes to track progress over time.
  • Educate families about behavioural strategies and techniques that can be utilized at home.
  • Stay informed about best practices in special education, patient care, and terminology relevant to the role.

Skills

  • Experience working with children and youth, particularly those with behavioural challenges or special needs.
  • Strong understanding of client care principles and practices.
  • De-escalation techniques with proven experience with verbal de-escalation skills.
  • Proficiency in terminology relevant to child development and behavioural health.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data related to behavioural interventions effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with children, youth, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Patience, empathy, and a strong commitment to supporting children's growth and development.
  • Critical thinking and perspective taking skills to act quickly to an everchanging environment.
  • Familiarity with dynamics of children and youth in transition.

This position is essential for creating a supportive environment that empowers children and youth to thrive.

Required Qualifications

Post Secondary degree or diploma in the social services field (child and youth work, developmental services, behaviour analysis, psychology, forensic psychology, community justice, criminology, applied behaviour analysis).

A MINIMUM of three years of active employment experience with children/youth.

Advanced communication skills both oral and written in ENGLISH.

Ability to work independently and part of a team.

Conflict resolution skills, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving skills.

Collaborative, strong communication and advocacy skills, adaptive skills, and strong expression.

A high level of ethics, inclusion practices, person-first philosophies, morals, and empathy.

Ability to navigate MS office applications to complete data and tracking sheets, reports, etc.

Current First Aid/CPR, CPI, Broad Sector Check.

Access to vehicle is an asset.

Additional qualifications or certificates in ABA, ASSIST, autism resources, or others are an asset.
